There's a place on Fairmount Ave

There's a place called Overseas Motor Works, 1501 Fairmount Ave., Phila. 215-763-2300

There is a great german shop foreman, as well as a very knowledgebe staff. They work on many import types, but I see lots of MB is the yard.

They were the folks that serviced my car for the PO and gave me all the records when I came in to get the car inspected. Its not an In-and Out shop, but the work and the advice is top notch, in my opinion. They are a mechanical/engine shop, and sub-contract the body work out.

I have been very happy with them. The prices aren't the cheapest around, but they are not up there with dealer prices. Additonally, they are willing to discuss alternatives with you (like finding your own parts, and having them do the labor, etc)

Heres some examples of labor costs
State insp $22
Replace steering damper $32
Replace Motor Mounts $80

As I get more familiar with my car, I become more confident in my ability to do some of the mechanical work myself, but those prices were from my initial 'once over' and inspection when I first got the car last year.

let me know who you find, and what you think of them.

Thanks,
J

I'll tell ya James,
It's hard to find someone you can trust when it comes to your car, I've had fairly good luck so far, I guess I'm trying to find a mechanic who really knows these cars, not just some stuff, but all the little things like the things we learn on this forum, someone who takes care of all the little things that go along with whatever service they are performing.
Problem is, where can you really find "that" Mechanic?

I'll give this guy a call, and keep ya posted.

If you feel like doing a bit of driving, there is Bill Ditmire on the White Horse Pike in Absecon (near Atlantic City). He is excellent.

If you really want someone who will look over the whole car and find anything that is wrong, I can recommend Neil at Star Service Center in Allentown PA. He is very knowledgeable with suspension stuff especially. They are a Bosch Authorized Service Center, and are AAA approved.

He's not necessarily cheap, but he usually finds something that may be wrong and usually fixes it on the spot. (This doesn't necessarily make my wife happy; she has a hard time understanding why an oil change can cost more than Wal-Mart or Jiffy Lube.)

A couple times he has had to keep the car overnight, once for a steering box, and another time for doing pads and rotors all around. I would recommend shopping for parts prices if he gives you a written estimate, because he is very close to MB list prices, maybe 5-10% off.

Any nice shops in the Philadelphia area?

I'm originally from the Central PA area, but are now in Philly for college. I'll be bringing down an 86 560 SEL later this year and I was wondering if anyone knew of any good shops around the area.

I've had some bad experience with dealerships in the past so I'm wondering if there are any small or privately owned shops around here in which I can actually talk to someone and get straight answers.

Looks like there's a lot of interaction on these boards, so maybe I'll be spending more time here from now on.

Thanks.

I wish I could help you out, but I'm on the opposite coast.

However, I'd like to welcome you aboard and encourage you to stick around...this is a great group of people. I found this site knowing nothing about Daimler-Benz cars, and am currently getting an information base prior to buying one...were it not for this site, I'm not sure what I would have done.

Keep the hamster runnin' and the tires spinnin'

You could try Neil at Star Service Center in Allentown. (610-437-3374). I know it's a good hour north of Phila, but he has worked on three of my cars. He's honest, if not cheap. (He's not really cheap, but it is a Bosch authorized place.) They don't offer loaner cars so you might have to wait for your car. Sorry I don't know of anyone closer to Phila.

Thumbs up Great parts shop in N.E. PA, N.W. NJ, S.E. NY area

Check out Russ Motors for great deals on parts for all foreign cars. They are a small business located at 205 Pennsylvania Ave. in Matamoras, PA. I have purchased many Mercedes, Volkswagen and Honda parts from them. Their parts are top-notch and they are great to deal with. They can be reached at 570-491-2777.

Excellent Shop in Western Pennsylvania

Indiana Sales and Service is an ex-dealership that still has the same tech and knowledge without the extra cost. It would be worth an hour drive to have their shopforeman work on the car. Ask for Joe, spend some time in senic Indiana or look me up.

Good indy in Mechanicsburg, PA

STAR Automotive has been servicing my W140 300SE for the past year. Jay and Karl are excellent technicians and their customer service skills are fine as well. Not to mention a labor rate of less than 60/hr. Best shop IMO in the central PA area.

Good mechanic in West Chester, PA?

Just bought a 97 E-320 and am looking for a mechanic.
Just sent it into the dealer for state inspection and an overall service and check-up, but want to find a mechanic for the long run.

Great shop near Philly, PA

Great shop, small, excellent work, cheap shop rate (in the $50s per hour). Robert Fox German Auto in Ambler, PA. It's a few miles out of Philly. Took my 16v there a little while ago. They were working on a Maserati and a 89 Porsche Turbo at the time. They can do exhaust, AC, engine, suspension, etc. Still looking for a shop closer to NY if anyone can tell me about one.
