Crankshaft Position Sensor DIY

How do I replace the crankshaft position sensor?

Anyone have a good write up or a .pdf from StarTek?

I am doing this this weekend.

Many thanks-

How to truely diagnose the problem?

I read another post here tonight about not replacing sensors too quickly as the cause of a problem may be something related like vacuum line or something.

I have a situation where the key of my 98 ML320 stays in the ON position and car just cranks. I can turn it off and try to restart and luckily to date it is restarting. The MB advisor says it's something between a "timing sensor" and the CPS, as these talk to each other.

My question is, how do you diagnose these types of problems so you know what to replace? I'm a fairly new DIY'er and realize that the techs have training etc - and in this particular case what does this cranking symptom sound like to you - CPS for sure?

Been there, done that.....................sounds like a failing CPS to me. Since this failure leaves no codes and is a common failure I would replace it before you get stranded somewhere. My 2 cents.

Cps

I agree with AZINN.

Sounds like cps to me based on my experience with this on an ML430. Be sure to let us know what you discover.

I'd definitely tackle CPS replacement before fuel pump pressure test, filter, etc. Good luck. You may find a post by me in this forum on this topic, including part numbers if your seach my name.

Well, ALMOST got stranded today and don't have time to fix it myself because I'm going on travel, so its at the local shop and they agreed it was the CPS.

Now, you mention some other things related to fuel, etc, and that goes back to my question which wasn't answered - how do you diagnose this type of stuff that does not come up on a code reader so you don't start repalcing stuff that's not the cause? If it just goes to experience, I'm good with that - just curious to learn going forward.

Thanks for the replies.
