Intermittant Transmission Lock out at startup

I have been having some intermittant trouble recently getting my 2000 ML320 transmission shift lever out of park. I have been using a pen to push down the release manually and move the shift lever out of park, then everything works fine. Sometimes it releases thereafter for a couple of days, sometimes not. Is there something I can look for to see if dirty or borken.

Clayton

If I'm understanding you correctly, I think that year you can adjust the cable at the transmission; look for the round rubber button on the cable going into the back of the transmission. Squeeze the button, and push it as far as you can towards the transmission -- this should fix your problem

The park interlock connects the park lock in the transmission to the ignition switch via the brake pedal. Other models with the same problem had a defected brake switch. It could be a bad locking park valve, part of the steering lock system. or brake switch.

No cables on the 2000, it's an ESM (touchshift). There were some problems early on with this design regarding water contamination, so if the problem started when you may have either spilled liquid on to the shifter assembly, or washed the console, it may be contamnated and will either dry out and work fine, or they did come out with an ESM less affected by water contamination.

Boy, I was wrong on two counts, and I've done one before Take what I say with a grain of salt, gentlemen and ladies, and always ask me twice (of course, I was up rather late when I wrote it...). Thanks Gilly

The first clue is the year (easy to remember, 2000 and newer = touchshift), and also the thing about releasing the shifter with a pen (in the little trap door) is a touchshift-only thing too, can't do that with the 98-99's.
