2002 ML500 Cold Engine Startup noise

I'm getting a noise when I fisrt start up the engine. It sounds like rocker arms out of adjustment, could this just be carbon build up. I never accelerate heavy or even come close to flooring it. not with gas at $2.50 per gal. if it is carbon build up, what do you suggest, or is rocker noise a common problem and needs to be looked at.

A friend of mine has a ML500 and MB just replaced the lifters under warranty for the same problem.

Do you use 0W-40 Mobil 1 synthetic oil & have it changed every 10K miles or less?? IF so then a lifter failure is the most common failure! If you don't service the engine like that OR more frequently than that IS the problem

2002 ML500 Cold Engine Startup noise

I have alway had the oil changed under the MB service plan, and under 10.000 miles. it started the last oil change in November at 58.000 miles. not sure what oil MB used. I just changed the oil last week and the oil smelled pretty gassy. I'm going to chage it again in a couple thousand miles, what do you suggest.

Have the valve cover removed on the side that has the noise & check the lifters. ANY that are loose will need replacement!

IF the engine oil runs 12K-15K even with 0-W40 Mobil1 there will be sludge in the engine! YOU need to change the oil at 10K MAX miles!
