Question Gilly, question about instrument cluster

Hey Gilly, is it possible to take the instrument cluster for a MY2000-2001 (140 mph), install it in a 1999 ML430 (120 mph), get the odometer "flashed" so the mileage is the same as the one being replaced, and also get it calibrated for the '99 since it originally shows 120 on the dash and not 140?

Thanks!

I don't believe it's possible, not really sure though, but typically you're not going to be able to swap clusters around from one to the next, they are ordered by VIN, and by VIN you would get the correct cluster, not for another model. But maybe a computer whiz could make it doable.

Thanks for answering so quickly Gilly! I almost bought the newer cluster from Ebay. I have installed the White Gauge Face from Performance Products (made by NR), and am quite disappointed in how unevenly the speedometer is illuminated. The gauge face for the MY2000-2001 is perfect (apparently due to yet one of the many design changes made to the MY2000) because the lighting is very even. That's why I was asking about the conversion. Thanks for the info, you probably saved me a good chunk of money!

Cool

Do you have the White Gauge Face from Performance Products (made by NRauto, P/N # 3534) installed though? When I have the factory installed black gauge face, yes, it is evenly lit, but not with the white one.

Even on NR's own website, it shows it is lit unevenly. I have attached the pic that they show on their website. If it doesn't show, here is the link: http://www.nrauto.com/gaugeimages/3534.jpg

I have already checked the bulbs both with a continuity tester, and also by swapping out known good bulbs and I still get the same result.

Thanks for your time and trouble.

That's probably worth looking in to if you want white faces, they may be able to calibrate to a different top speed as well. I did get involved in a few mods like this with a 124 for example and it ended up looking nice night or day.

LED replacement for instrument cluster bulbs

Do any forum members know of anyone online who sells an LED replacement for the little itty bitty instrument cluster bulbs that we find ourselves replacing?
