98 ml320 gear shift probem
 

please help, 98 ml320 gear shift is not operating correctly. Gear shift lever moves freely and does not require brake pedal to be pushed in order to move lever. Gear shifter moves freely without keys in ignition. Is this a simple fix I can do myself. Hopefully it is just a part I can just replace.

Not an expert, but I would say the shifter bushing needs to be replaced. This is a $1.25 part, can be DIY but not easily accessible.

could it be some kind of electronic module/ solenoid? When you push the brake on a vehicle as you are about to shift out of park on an automatic transmission you can usually hear some kind of electronic click disengaging the shifter lock from park. I cannot hear anything on ml320....any other possibilities?
