Key Fob Cental locking non-functional

The locks all work with the switch inside. The fuse is good, and I swapped around the relays. I changed the batteries in both keys. Can't get the locks to lock, unlock, the tailgate to release, or the emergency function to work with the key buttons.
I also followed the owner's manual procedure for resetting the system?
Any ideas? help? SOS?

Doubtful that both key fobs failed simultaneously...

..reread the instructions and try again. Specifically, the key position in the ignition.

Also, make sure you do this with the door closed..on some models it matters...

Ah!
I'll try it with the door closed in the AM! The book says nothing about it, but it certainly sounds plausible.

OK, that did not work either.
I tried it with doors closed unlocked and doors closed locked.
My neighbor said same thing happened to him, and had to bring it to a dealer to be reprogrammed somehow.

I wanna know if you get this to work. I've always been under the impression they have to be ordered for the vehicle. How did you get a metal blade to start the engine?
If it's going to work at all, which I still doubt, the dealer will need to do the "learn new RF key" with the computer. But WAIT will it even start the engine?

The keys are for the car. They came with it. But the remote lock/unlock/tailgate release/panic buttons do nothing. The car runs great - drove it 250 miles today at up to 85mph - runs great!

I did the position "0", position"2", back to position "0", then hold lock and tailgate buttons for 15 seconds, then release and press any two remote buttons twice as the book says to make it work. It does not.

Stopped by the dealer today to pick up 4 new rear license plate rivnut thingys (technical, eh?) because the screws were siezed in them (so now I have to grind the old ones out - what Nazi genius designed this hooey crap?), and asked about my problem. They can fix it, but I have to make an appointment to hook up the computer and program it all. Another day maybe.

If these are not new keys, they should work. I think your instructions are wrong.
Turn the key to ON, then OFF, remove key, hold down lock button, push UNlock button 5 times, then release button and push any of the remote buttons. (try it again where you push the UNlock button 10 times).
I've never heard of doing it the way that you stated.

I see in my 98 ML manual that they do tell you to resynchronize the way you said. Try it my way.

Hi Gilly
Thanks for helping me out here, but that did not work either.

Gilly 04-07-2005 05:07 AM

Oh, the button pushing all has to be done within 10 seconds, did you do it fast enough?

waybomb 04-07-2005 07:23 AM

Yes, almost immediately.
I'll try a bunch of other combinations this am.
Do the doors have to be locked, unlocked, or doesn't matter when doing this procedure? I'll try it all ways.

Brought it to the dealer today. they tried to program the car/key and it would not work. Seems both keys have bad internal electronics. So I ordered one new key.

What if I buy the same key off of eBay - can just the metal key part be swapped out, and the then the electronics re-programmed?

Gilly 04-12-2005 06:51 PM

I don't believe the keys from the internet will work. I could be wrong. Has anyone reading this have any luck with keys which weren't ordered for your specific vehicle from MB?? I think I'll post this question at OD and Tech Forum also.

Got my new key today.
Also took had them check the balancer for the free replacement. Sure enough, it had to be changed out.

This site is great. Saves me a bunch of money, but more importantly, a lot of headaches.

Thanks all!
