Unhappy Crank Position Sensor - ML320 Replacement procedure

I have a problem where the car will start fine but will stall if left to idle for more that about 5 minutes. Once it has stalled it won't start again for anything from 10 to 30 minutes. The garage working on the problem has replaced the O2 sensors and the fuel pump relay and has now told me that the ECU (Engine Control Unit) is faulty. I get the feeling that they are just replacing parts and hoping for the best.

From what I have read here it seams to me that the problem could well be the Crank Position Sensor.

I have read that there is a thread that details how to replace this sensor but I can't seam to find it. If anyone knows how this is done, can they please let me know the process/procedure? Do I need specialized tools? Is it easy to get to/find?

Thanks, is this an easy job or do you recommend that it be done by a dealership?

I also have a stalling problem and have in mind to replace the crank postion sensor on my 3.2 104 engine (late 1995). The sensor at the rear of the engine on the flywheel housing looks very inaccessible.

Will removing the starter assist ?

Do I need a special tool, and if so what tool ?

Thanks in anticipation of your reply.

Regards

It is a farily easy job to do, You'll need that inverted torx socket as he said, 1/4" swivel joint and long 1/4" extension. It also helps if you have skinny arms!

You were correct to suspect the crank sensor, 8 or 9 times out of 10 its the culprit for engines stalling out. If you compare its magntic pull to the new sensor, you'll probabaly find thats it is quite diminshed.

edit: that was for the first guy, I'll have to take a closer look at a 104 for the other one.

Look forward to your feedback on fitting a crank position sensor to a 104 992 engine.
Need to know special tools required etc.

Many thanks in anticipation.

I folded and took the option of having it done by the garage. On the positive side, it seams, (only been 1 week), to have solved the problem with regard to the stalling - so I am one again a happy chappie

Thanks for the advice
