those new brackets should come with the shims already attached to the ends of them. They will also come with the splined piece to put on the torsion bar. You can just reuse your old ones and have a nice set of heavy shiny paperweights

Well, John, a million thanks. That was the problem. I ordered new brackets today (to the tune of $152 ea - hopefully my extended warranty will cover that). But even after packing the old broken ones with grease and reinstalling them, the sound is gone.
