ML Drivers side mirror install

Am replacing the drivers side mirror on a 99 ML with one salvaged from a 98. It seemed simple, but I keep getting about a 2 or 3 mm gap at the top between the mounting plate and the door? Is there a trick? Is the built in bolt on the mirror mount adjustable?
