Mechanical only key

As per title is it possible to get a mechanical only key for the ML (2002 model ) ? I realize it won't actually be able to start the car.

Also if it is and I lock the car with the remote, and then open it with the mechanical key, anyone know what will happen ? ( Alarm go off, disabling of existing smart keys ?? )

TIA

Tom

they do have one available, that comes with the transponer that will start the car, but doesn't have a remote. the part number for the key is 163-760-14-06 was about $55.00, obviously it will have to be ordered by vin number. the alarm will always go off if the door is opened using the mechanical key, ML did not have smart keys

Thx for your reply.

Now I am a little curious what a "smart key" is in Mercedes terms. So are you saying the fold up key / remote that you get standard with the ML doesn't have a chip in it that the car authenticates before it will start the car ?

Or it does have this mechanism , and that is what you meant by the key having a transponder ?

Also if I ordered the "regular" remote entry key, would that work straight out of the box ? Or would I need to take it and the car into the dealer before it would open the doors via remote etc ?

it does have the chip, it is the infrared keys that are considered smart, see picture below. if you bought a new remote key from mercedes it would need to be learned using the mercedes factory diagnostic tool, it would start the car, just not operate the central locking

According to the manual, if the alarm is activated for some reason, it can be cancelled either with the remote or by inserting the key and turning it to position 2.

Can you also turn the alarm off with the mechanical key like this ?
