Unhappy Check Engine Light is On - ' 99 ML-320

I have a simple problem (I hope). My check engine light came on a week ago, and I simply opened the gas cap and retightened it. The light went off after using the vehicle a couple of times that day. A few days later, the light came back on. I tried the same trick, but this time, to no avail. Any ideas what might be causing this? I have to get the truck inspected (I'm in Massachsuetts) and am afraid that the vehicle will fail, as they do an OBD inspection (Check Engine = Failed Inspection). The truck has 133 K miles on it.

Any help/ suggestions would be appreciated.

There are approx 150 items that can cause a check engine light. WHAT is the code(s)?

Codes

I haven't gotten the codes yet...I was hoping someone had a similar situation where there some "home remedy". I have the vehicle scheduled to be looked at by Ed Owen at European Auto Solutions. He used to be at Hatch & Sons, and is the best person I have ever dealt with when it comes to auto repairs. I was trying to save some $$ before having to set up an appointment.

Codes

Thanks for the info! The ML is in need of service anyway, so I'll have the problem checked out. It's good info for future use, though. Thanks again!
