Question for M.B.DOC

Does the OM642 engine (320CDI) have a Crankshaft Position Sensor like the M112 and M113? If it does, I wonder if it's prone to failure like the gasoline engines.

It does, #65 in illustration.

Those on M112/3 didn't fail in first year, either.

The part number is 004-153-87-28 & last year we sold 4, they also fit the M272 engine.

List price is a WHOPPING $26. Most other applications run $100+
Guess MB is going to the lowest bidder on their new engines!

Thanks DOC. There's a guy on another forum who has every symptom (engine shuts down while hot. Restarts fine after it cools down.) that sounds like a failed CPS; but his dealer is doing other stuff (1st visit replace fuel rail. 2nd visit reflash transmission 3rd visit no report back yet.) with no relief. Hopefully, they'll get it on this 3rd visit.

Are you back at a dealer? If so, which one?

Perhaps not, but the ML320CDI owner on the other forum just had it diagnosed by the dealer on their 3rd visit/attempt to fix the problem after being advised that this was the probable issue by an amateur on the forum who hadn't even seen the car.

I "visit" 2 dealers to keep up with info, BUT no longer have the burning desire to turn wrenches all of the time.

Kids these days, what are we to do? Diagnosis of intermittent problems have always been difficult!
