Headlight switch position?

On my wife's '04 ML350, on the headlight switch, if you rotate the switch "backward" as if you're turning the lights OFF, there is one more position past "OFF". Nothing happens as far as I can tell when the switch is in this position.

What is it for?

Standing lights, turn the turn signal switch to 1 side or the other at the same time.

Do it with ignition off.

OK, I tried what you guys said, and it works as stated. The only question I have now is: "What is the point?" Seems to me if you want these lights on, you'd want both sides on, not just the left OR right side. What am I missing?

They are parking lights, select the side to turn on based on what side of a street you park on, it is a little reminder for the folks driving not to run into your car.

Thanks again for the info, guys. It makes sense now. Not sure I would ever need this feature, but at least now I know what it's there for.
