How about a '73 Mercedes 508D Camper?
 

I think this is what eventually became the Sprinter, given that it's a European van chassis.

I'm looking at buying one of these. It's a 1973 Mercedes 508D. "4 speed + granny" transmission, OM315 engine - 3.6L, 4 cyl diesel, 80 hps.

I'd basically like someone to talk me out of it best they can. It runs apparently, but needs some sort of switch for the starter. Needs new tires. Has original wood paneling interior and appliances, although it looks a little rough.

How is parts availability on these? How's that engine? If something goes belly-up, am I totally SOL on getting it fixed at all? What other engines would fit that chassis? What things should I watch out for?

That 6-wheeled beast (2 front, 4 rear) is powered by an 80 HP engine. Probably very torquy, though -- 3.6L. But still. I bet it only goes 55 :p

That interior shot shows the corner which looks to be in the best condition, there's a couple other pictures that show the rest of the interior to be in need of a bit of TLC.

I would imagine if your engine went south, you could (with a few modifications) swap out the engine and transmission with any of the 300 turbo diesel engine/transmission combinations from the late 70's to 84. I have always liked the look of these trucks but as you mentioned they are very underpowered (sloooow). If it is rust free and not to expensive I would say give it a run.

also you could fit those new dually wheels, swap out old junk from inside to new ones, do little body work and possible swap engine and it be really neat
