Monster rv tuning assistance desperately needed!

I hope someone can help me. I own a 97 Mercedes 4x4 RV 410D. The engine is an original, reliable but puny 100 hp. During a trip from Zurich to Lisbon the engine just couldn't muster enough pep for the highway, especially uphill. Pretty sad when 18 wheelers fully loaded keep passing you! I need some tuning suggestions.

I would like to add as much horsepower as possible. I only 4x4 occasionally. So top end speed and uphill pep is a must for long trips. I would even consider replacing the engine but not sure I could install a sprinter engine due to engine compartment size limitations.

Also any suggestions on soundproofing engine noise? I still have a headache from the trip!

My truck is a sheep in wolf's clothing. I want to change that!

Thanks Guys!

The Monster is In Panama

Hello.

My name is Luis. I was navigating on the web looking for tires for a special tire size and realized that I own your previous Mercedez.

Old post...and never heard from again..

72 horse power...no wonder !

FYI.......
n September 1981 the 407 D, 409 D and 410 were added with a gross weight of 4,600 kg (10,141 lb). The 409 D had a bigger and more powerful Diesel engine with five cylinders, 2998 cc and 88 hp (65 kW). It was the OM 617 engine which was also used in the Mercedes-Benz 300D passenger car and 300GD G-Wagon. Other revisions throughout the production were minor, the OM616 engine having a modified cylinder head and less bore which lowered the capacity from 2404 cc to 2399 cc, but producing slightly more power (72 bhp) and using 5-speed-gearboxes instead of the early 4-speed-versions.

In autumn 1988, two new diesel engines - called OM 601/23 and OM 602/29 - were offered, awarded the "Diesel 1989" award.[3]

After 18 years of production, 970,000 of the Bremer Transporter were produced. In 1995 the Mercedes-Benz T1N Sprinter was launched, replacing the T1.

The 410d didn't have the 617 engine. If it did it would have been a 409d. Not sure what engine is in the 410d but it is 100hp if the numbers are consistent with the other van numbers x07d=70hp, x09d=90hp

hmm, this is unusual, I always wondered if these were ever offered as 4x4 versions,
Are those gwagen axles and transfer case parts under it ?

Was it an aftermarket conversion?

I am pretty sure the later 410D used the 2.9L version of the OM602 but in N/A form.

The answer to the OPs question is probably swapping in a 2.5L OM602 turbo and tweaking that a little bit. They did 2.9 turbos but it was in the W210 and used an electronic pump and wasn't really rated at much more HP than the 2.5, but I guess the lower torque would be good for a truck. However after 8 years he either sold the truck to lferrmerc or got over it. So I guess this is all irrelevant.

Thanks Guys for the Info... This engine is a OM602. Took it camping on really rough roads here in Panama and She did more than Well... Im amazed on the capability despite the weight of it.

I understand it is a swiss company that does the aftermarket conversion.

Yes it has G-Wagon axles on.
