ML will not start (Fuel Pump?)
Hello All, I just changed my fuel filter the other day along with the updated hoses. At first sight the car started fine but I didn't drive it that night. The next morning the car started kind of rough, ran for a few seconds and then died just like it was doing before. Then today it did the same thing once again, so I swapped the fuel pump relay with another and same results. Actually after putting the relays back where they belong the car wouldn't even start. It would crank for a while but not turn over. I don't have ANY clue whats going on.... HELP PLEASE.
These are the new codes coming up P0161 P0156 P0141 |

I am aware what the codes are for but as I've read in other post O2 codes doesn't necessarily mean "change the 02's" I was wondering if there may be any other known issues that may be causing these same symptoms.

I know it isn't one of your codes but this sounds just like a bad crankshaft sensor. I would try that for sure.

I thought that as well but I changed my CPS last summer, and my experiences with that is it would malfunction after the car reached a certain temperature (around 81 degrees) so I kind of ruled it out. I'm unaware of any other conditions in which the CPS would malfunction, do you? How often do they go? How can I be sure it's the CPS?
Note: It's is very cold in Chicago (15 degrees F), and the car hasn't been driven in about 2 months. Also i've noticed there isn't much gas in the tank (less than 1/4th). Thanks for your input! |

I'm wondering if you might have a pinched hose? I know they are plastic, just having done the same job on my 2001 ML320 last week, and I know how difficult it is to get to the hoses and filter. If you had a folded over hose that has sat long enough to pinch itself off you would have the situation you've described. Maybe you should eyeball your work for possible problems in that area. It's also possible that your fuel pump has chosen this moment to die. (edit to add this comment) Another thing is that the fuel gages on these vehicles is known to have problems reading less than 1/4 tank of fuel, and it is entirely possible that you are just out of gas!

Hey, sorry I've taken so long. There was some kind of issue with my username and PW. I checked the hoses to/from the fuel filter and none are pinched. But oddly enough the car has been starting but dying soon after. The only way it runs is if I pump the gas slightly until it gets a steady idle. If the pump was out would it even be able to start/idle? I still think it is something else, but I'm am trying to do everrything I can to avoid the dealer.
