Deisel G Wagens?

How difficult is it to find Deisel G Wagens in the US? I've heard that they were sold in Canada, but not officially in the US. I've seen one deisel model in Vienna, VA that the owner told me he bought in Austria, I believe.

Fulcrum525 06-12-2009 10:35 AM

Its hard enough finding any grey market G's nevermind diesels. Keep one thing in mind, the 1980s diesel Gwagens had NON-Turbo engines and will be pretty slow. I drove a 280GE the other day and was very very impressed with it. It had more then enough power. I'm surprised that people complain about them (Granted it was the soft top version)

I'm guessing your talking about the one in Maryland. That looks pretty good the only problem I would have is that its right hand drive.... Whats bad about the standard wheelbase?

Also theres a 350GD for sale in MO problem is its a 350 (Avoid)

panZZer 06-12-2009 03:24 PM

I am just partial to the long 4 door, these things are too expensive to get a short when a jeep could handle it for cheaper--but the short has a good bit less mass to move around.-I think the one in maryland is not the one i saw, I do two different searches benz g wagon and benz g class

Fulcrum525 06-12-2009 03:29 PM

This is the only one that i'm seeing.......

a 92 Item number: 170343519629 it's a long too, just got thataluminum head disease and one of those wonderful 90's benz wiring harnesses

Fulcrum525 06-12-2009 03:46 PM

Yep thats the 350 I mentioned. Avoid it unless you find that it's had the engine replaced. (350 is the aluminum bottom end disease, the heads are perfectly fine from 1990 on)

I'm not sure about the wireing harness. The G's tend to hold onto older parts for much longer then normal Mercedes. Also since they we're built in Austria they were probably able to avoid falling into the trap of having bio-degradable harnesses that caused the bad reputation in the first place.

Anyone here with a 90s G to confirm this?

panZZer 06-12-2009 03:49 PM

Item number: 150350591850 here's the tan short one I saw

I got a granny gear 5 speed and a spare 617a--just wont break away with 17-$18000.00 these days, the black one is pretty, aint it!

They have never been officially sold in North America. Several of them have been brought in as grey market imports.

The early to mid 90's G's had the deteriorating wire harness problem, too.

That sucks. Do you happen to know what the cut off years are?

I can tell you where to get that info, but Bill probably wouldn't like it if I posted the link.

Less expensive Diesel G'Wagen

'Buy a five year old G500...Remove engine and sell on Flea-bay.
Order BSN (Brand Spanking New) OM603.
Have Installed in former "G500".

Happy Forevermore.

AND no one will know what the hell's under the Hood.

Dee8go 06-13-2009 09:27 AM

The ad in that link claims 30MPG. Does that sound right? Would the longer wheelbase be pretty close to the same mileage as that?

From a friend with first hand experience: 1994 to 1996-97.

I love how lots of these clueless sellers will state that. Just because the smaller lighter more aerodynamic cars get figures like that doesn't mean that a G with the same engine will do the same.....I think 20MPG is about the most you can get out of any gray market model....and thats pushing it. (Don't quote me on that, i'm a pretty rusty on my G knowledge these days)

Guess a 90-91 model would still be the best bet then. Damn that Texas one is really tempting me now...

Dee8go 06-14-2009 06:44 AM

Has anybody seen that new Volkswagen comercial where the guy is bragging to his next door neighbor about the mileage he gets with his Prius? Then the next door neighbor tells him he gets 40 or 50 or something like that with his new deisel VW.

Maybe Americans will finally start to appreciate the deisel engine more, once they really look into it.

Yes, it is; but it is no military prototype - not with that incomplete VIN the seller is providing.

Oh yeah definatly not a prototype of any sort. It looks way too close to regular wolfs for that. If anything I wouldn't call it that special. Military G's can and are often configured in thousands of unique ways.

BUT!!!! Military G's are W461's; and he's showing it as a W460. It's obviously somebody's conversion to make it look like military. I can tell you at least one company in Austria that does exactly that.

I would never touch it if it wasn't authentic, i'm just posting the link in case Dee8go would like to see it.

I've heard of people kitting out Land Rover Discoverys and advertising them as real "Camel Trophy" vehicles, thankfully there is a good club that will tell you whether or not someone is lieing. I didn't realize anyone was pulling the same trick with Wolfs. Seems kinda pointless....aren't there plenty of surplus Wolfs on the market in Germany?

Dee8go 06-18-2009 04:35 PM

Thanks, Fulcrum. If I ever had one of them, I'd want the enclosed one.

Good, that will leave the soft tops for me :) (Pretty much made up my mind on that after driving that 280GE last week)
