Ya gotta lather up the back of the brake pad with anti-squal paste / brake lube. Else they will squeal.

It's a true story. When you apply the brakes the pads will move forward ever so slightly while being squeezed against the disc. If the back of the pad is dry, she's gonna squeal as the metal of the pad slides past the metal piston.

Permatex make a silver colored one. I use it on bolts that I'd like to get at again too.

What I found to be even more critical than any paste, especially on an ML, is to make sure you get the pads bedded in properly. This is tougher on an ML due to the humongous brakes they have, you really have to stand on em to get them to bed in.

Just curious; did you have your dirty greasy paws on the face of the pads or in other words - despite not using goo did you get other muck on the face of the pad - then you will defniately have a squeal no matter how much goo you apply to the back of the pads afterwards.
The front of the pads should be treated like surgical equipment
