Exclamation If your '99 ML is still under warranty, here's some more stuff to look out for...

Got mine back from the shop after two weeks...why so long?

During the long trip from Texas to Illinois (and back) the BAS/ESP light on the dash came on. The ML didn't act strangely, and after stopping at one point and restarting, the light never came on since.

Took it to the dealership on a Monday and they did pull some error codes. They had to replace a motor of some sort that activated in low-range mode...apparently the new motor was an upgraded part. The tech borrowed it overnight to make sure no more codes were popping out. They kept it for a couple more days as I had them reinstall a rubber seal that had fallen from the sunroof, and had no idea where it came from.

Picked up the truck on Friday, only to hear a sound from the sunroof that seemed like a sticky substance was peeling off the glass...the service advisor saw the residue left on the glass roof and concluded that the sound deadening panel on the roof had come off, necessitating a complete headliner removal to correct the problem. SO I brought the truck back the next Monday. They had it for three days for that deal, and also reglued a door seal that had started to come off.

On my last trip to the dealer, I had them fix two other sound deadener panels on both driver's side doors that had done the same thing.

Just picked up the ML last night, and all is well.

I have read others having to get a leaky rear washer replaced, and that too, had been corrected early in the ML's life.

Despite the numerous problems with ML seals, I have been pretty happy with my purchase. My only out-of-pocket so far has been routine A/B services and brake pads at 15K.

I did take a peek at the fresh new 2002s in the lot, but unless I can get a steal on a used ML55, I will probably keep what I've got...plus there is less than a year left on the payment booklet and it's MINE, all MINE!!!
