wtb: older G-wagen

I am looking for an older G-wagen preferably the convertable. I want something in decent condition doesn't necessarily need to run as i am prob going to be putting a 603 diesel in it.

The cabrios are always more expensive due to their rarity; and, although the economy is in the tank, the sellers usually do - eventually - get their price.

what should I expect to pay for a hard top swb? lwb? something pre 90's. In the 90's they were ruined with too many electronics.

Way too many variables but generally speaking.....

80s models tend to hover around $10,000 for rusty two door examples to around $15,000 for a LWB. One in good condition or restored can push upwards of $20,000.

The 90's models have electronics but they are good electronics. Nowhere near as much worry as the post 2002 models. Prices vary widely on the 90s models but tend to be in the $20,000 to $30,000 range for a LWB. 1990s SWB or Cabriolets are VERY hard to find and usually priced well above their LWB counterparts.

I recommend keeping an eye on Ebay (Go to motors, Mercedes-Benz, G-Class, sort by year)

thas the disappointing thing about this whole process is i can get a newer one like a G500 with a reliable engine and transmission for the same cost as an old one that needs work.... 30 grand starts to approach some of the first AMG G-wagens.

That's just the way the market is for the Pre-Mbusa models. Also not all older ones need work and many newer ones do need work. If anything the post-mbusa models are more prone to being abused. (The older ones are owned by enthusiasts more often then not)

Also keep in mind that sometimes the sellers have unrealistically high expectations about the price that people will pay for them. Here are two personal examples. (The green one is still for sale )

What a great day test driving old Mercedes
280GE....what should I expect?

I would love that green one!!! that is perfect .... a 603 turbo wouldn't be a hard swap.

On the 80s models perhaps but the 90s models seem to be accurate except for the very early W463s.

There did seem to be a noticeable decline in the Europa models prices last year. (Economy or perhaps the post 2002 models finally got cheap enough to make an impact on the pre-Mbusa models?)

I've been eyeing up a 1988 280GE lwb and a 1993 300GE lwb. But my friend in parts advised me to stay away from both, that they are very costly to maintain and repair.

I'm on the fence as to what to do.
