Meaninigless G-Wagen post

This isn't super important, but I need to share. I got to drive my first G last night. A new G550...

Well now I know what its all about, I'm 100% sold, the way the car goes down the road, the way you sit in it, the way it makes you feel... what a phenomenal vehicle.

My only critique is it was very hard to park in a tight parking spot. The truck felt extremely nimble for an SUV, but then at very low speeds, like sub 5 mph the truck felt... sort of cumbersome. I may have just been nervous parking someone elses $100k truck.

No such thing as a meaningless post when a G is involved

I don't think they're cumbersome (I've gotten them into some pretty tight spots while parallel parking) I think what your reffering to is the fact that the steering is pretty darn heavy on the MBUSA models. That could make the truck feel tough to park at low speeds but after spending a little time with it you really don't notice it and you'll park perfectly every time.

I would expect that the height at which you sit might also take a little getting used to, as well. It looks to me like you are up pretty high in one of those, are you not?

Yes. You can see the tops of the roofs of some other SUVs.

I'm sure there was learning curve to it. I wish I could fit one into my budget, I absolutely loved it.

Right now, nothing. I've got too many projects to even buy a non-project car. Maybe $10k? But not that I want to spend. I'm currently in school and a G just isn't feasible right now. And I'd rather wait for a luxo US 463. The euros are very cool but I'm a yuppy and I'd rather have a 500. I'd really like to have a 463 diesel but they are so expensive I'd rather pay the fuel premium on a gas US truck.

Yeah that's a general consensus and a sound one too. If you want a 463 diesel my recommendation is to get one with a turbo. NA diesel G's are SLOW.

Recent/long thread that went over the exact same thing....

Stay away from this G...

I'll wait 5-6 years and buy what I want. I've driven n/a and turbo E-classes back to back and yeah, turbos are a necessity. I'll probably just buy a G550 or maybe a G55, but I'm talking out a wallet that isn't mine.

I was just so stoked to get to drive one around.

The G is a PITA to manuver at speeds under 5mph. Well, compared to most other cars. Steering is fairly heavy weighted, and its got the turning radius of the moon.

Once your used to it, its a blast to drive!

The only thing I like about the G is the solid feel. Other than that I can't stand them. The doors are hard to close, the steering sucks, they ride like crap, and the reflections from all the flat glass makes driving at night an exercise in distraction.

Yeah, I know all about the legendary off-road capbility, but so what? If I need to cross a river, or climb a mountain, I'd rather destroy an old F-250.

I guess that puts me in the minority, but I'll take a GL over a G any day.

Oh yeah, I almost forgot. I agree with the post about the G55 being stupid. Every time I drive one I find myself wondering what the MB guys were thinking of. Then it hits me. There's definitely a market for those things in this country. I must be getting old.

I know, that's one of the reasons I like them so much. The G-Class is archaic and old fashioned, just like me

The GL-Class is a great car there's no doubt about it. But again it's down to personal tastes. A GL350 would be great to have but for me, it has to be a G.

Its all relative, drive a 3/4 ton full size crew cab truck for awhile or a dump truck and the G will feel like parking a Civic.

BTW this is America get the V8.
