Looking at a 2007 ML320 CDI

After owning a 124 diesel for the past 14 years I am looking at a 2007 320 CDI with 49,000 miles on it. I don't know a lot about them yet. It looks and drives like a new car and takes off like a rocket! They are offering us a one year extended warranty. They are asking $36K, and we have not begun negotiating yet. It is 4-matic also. We are replacing a 2008 Toyota Highlander that got totaled, looking at the 320 because of the diesel engine, and also is is roomy enough to fit me at 6'4" and 235 lbs.

Anything I should know/look for on this car?

Whatever you do, negotiate an extra year on the warranty. It's great that MB now offers 2yr/135k on CPO, but who is going to drive 50-80k in a year? Lexus gives you 3 years AND 100k miles. Never been thrilled with MB's timetables.

A very nice power train! Not a DIYer friendly vehicle though!

Don't try and get an extended warranty. Get one

2007-2008 are best years for these vehicles as beginning in 2009 they get urea injection, which isn't so bad, but the runflat tires are.

I had a 2007 ML 320CDI for 70k miles and traded it on a Cayenne. Big mistake.

The two issues I had with the ML were the air suspension - fixed after 3-4 upgrades on the compressor. The other is the 7-speed transmission. After several firmware upgrades and a switch to the newer ATF formulation, it was somewhat better but still harsher shifting that it should have been; and it hunted for the right gear on occasion - not up to the standards I would expect from MB.

After my extreme dissatisfaction with the Cayenne I would have purchased another ML CDI, but the run flats were the deal breaker.
