Can not get the water pump gasket to stay in place , in the small groove. Is there a paste or adhesive of some kind to keep gasket in place while pump is installed.

My pump came with the black rubber gasket which fits it just keeps slipping out of the goove.

Yes you can use adhesive, I hope you have an original Mercedes water pump because on the after market the groove is too small.
