Anyone use a lot of oil?
I've got 2000 ML 320 w/ 151,000 miles and about 20,000 miles ago, I have needed to add about 1 quart every month. There is no leak but it seems like it just burns off. This was the same quirky thing about my BMW after it hit 100,000 miles.
Is this normal? |

generally speaking, it's normal for ml320 having this mileage.
you might want to clean/replace EGR tube since when it gets clogged, oil comsumption increases. search for more info in this forum |

I thought everyones ML320's used a lot of oil. There has been lots of conversation about this subject on various forums. Mine does something similar, but maybe not quite as much.

I have the same problem with my wifes 98 ML320 with 85000 miles.
The oil consumption is increasing a lot when driving long downhill roads and using the engine/gear as brake. This could normally indicate worn valve guides. However, I read somewhere that there have been issues with the inlet manifold gasket on the 320 that fail and suck oil into the inlet ports during these driving conditions. Anybody with more info on this? Per. |

Not an ML, but my E430 (M113 engine) is using oil. About 150,000 Km on the engine and it uses oil, especially while highway driving. It will use about 1L/1000 Km on the highway. City driving, the consumption is far less.

I have noticed that my car (not an ML, G Wagen) seems to use a fair bit of oil, and yet it doesn't seem to be burning any and I can find on evidence of leaks under the car. I don't know where it's going. Is this true for any of you guys? The first time I checked it after I had bought it, I freaked out. I pulled the stick out and there was NO oil on it at all. It turned out to be 2 qts low! I didn't realize then that it holds about 8 qts. Still can't figure out where it's going, though.

I just pegged over 200k on my 98ML 320 and it's using 1Qt every 1,000-1,500 miles. I've just become accustomed to adding a qt every time my light goes on.
No Leaks, and no burning. It's been like this the last three years...since about 120k. |

My 2000 ML320 uses no oil in 10,000 mile oil changes. It never has used any oil. However, only approx 50,000 miles on it. (Mobil 0W-40)

sudden heavy oil use?
I've got 250,000 miles on my '99 Ml-320 and it is getting towards using a quart of mineral oil (always Castrol 10-40) every 5,000 mile change (inc/ filter). Bit of smoke in the air after I fuss around launching the boat.
This thread has reassured me that it is unlikely that a sudden increase in oil usage is in my immediate future. By the way, replacing the oil pressure test port (like $20) cured an oil drip problem many miles ago. Some may mistake this for usage. |
