2012 engine any good?

ML-350s got a 60 degree V-6 w/o balance shafts and with direct injection in 2012. Apparently developed with the similar Jeep engine (which I think is a dog w/o 2 stage induction plenum.) Anyway, I might buy used and wonder if I should go for the 2012 ML or if the new engine is buggy. Any problems with those pricey new injectors?
I'm reading that early adopters of direct injection (VW, Audi, BMW) were troubled by carbon build-up on intake valves so I wonder about that. Also 2012 transmissions had problems although most were oil-burners and were repairable for $1000.
Apparently there are no balance shaft problems after 2008 with the earlier 90 degree V-6 (introduced with circumcision commercials to disguise that it was unbalanced by design.)
No problems with my 250,000 mile '99 but it could be time to just let it go and the price has risen substantially. I do carry a spare used tranny when I drive cross-country though and the reports of tranny problems in the 2012 are unsettling.
I'm in it for the long haul so maybe a low mileage 2011 would be a better choice. Probably easier to get at the 12 plugs too.
Visited the Sea Int Auto Show and talked with the service rep re the 2012 ML. Claims no intake valve problems but acknowledges that the 2014 is hacked to run hotter with electric thermostat or coolant heater (says its for emissions though). Says the new tow rating is up 50% to 7500#s but doesn't know of any physical changes to justify increase. Acknowledges lesser transmission problems for both gas and diesel. Agrees balance shaft problems were solved in 2008.
I think I will buy a low mileage 2011.

I've read to many horror stories about the new engines. The older engines would do over 500,000 miles (diesel) the gasoline some over 400,000 mi.I'v read the new engines are dead at 160,000 miles. Its a shame Mercedes has turned back to profitts, and not quality.

Helpful, on point, and well cited sources. Clearly you've got a lot of first hand knowledge on the subject, glad you weighed in.
