G Wagen Turbodiesel question

Car is 1992 with PA title. Anybody with experience registering car like this in Crazy State of California?

I have had some experience. Does it have a federalization sticker or an EPA sticker. If you have a PA title bring it in to the DMV. Keep trying even if the teller sends you away. Call the main office in Sacramento. It can be a pain but if you get the right person from the DMV then it should work. Your just under the 1995 smog law so I think it will work. Is PA a strict smog state? It took me a really long time to get my non federalized car in but finally after many trips and calls to the DMV it worked.

Thanks for responding. No EPA stickers, other States are not as restrictive as California, here is problem - DMV web is saying that 1979 and older diesels are exempt from smog and Bar is saying that 1997 and older are exempt. I will try to talk to referee at BAR next week and perhaps get straight answer

Did your truck slip through customs without ever being federalized. There must be some importation documents. If you can get a letter from the EPA it would help. Is the PA title in your name? California DMV only smogs vehicles from 1995 and later. They still have to be compliant even if they don't get tested. Maybe its 1979 for gassers and 1995 for diesels.
There is or was a company that imported a lot of GWagons. They could be of help. I wish I could remember the name.
Keep trying and be sure to be in touch with the main DMV office in Sacramento. The person who got my car through was from that office. If you have the PA title in your name it should work. You might need some documents from PA DMV. Find out the state where it was first imported. If you can get an EPA pass that should get you in write them a letter. It may take a while. Be the squeaky wheel, annoy the hell out of them on the phone at the Sac office. It took me forever. One person from the DMV told me I would never be able to register my car here. Well she was wrong.

I willtry.

If you can get it straightened out with the EPA then you should be able to get it in. I wish I knew the name of the person who helped me. Don't even try with the regular teller at your local office until the person in Sac has dealt with it. It will be a waste of time. The referee might be a runaround as well, but it is worth a shot. Mine is an 82 so that could be the difference. 92 definitely had more smog stuff, even for a diesel. After she worked mine in, all I had to do was a VIN check. They definitely have not lowered the smog year for diesels.
It is not 79. All cars "must" be compliant, but no one checks diesels because there is no test designed for them. If they started checking everyone's diesels to see if modifications have been done, a lot of cars would be scrapped.
The reason they want to bug you, is because they California has no EPA record for the vehicle. If there never was one, the person who imported that vehicle failed in that aspect. There may be a door sticker or plate naming the importer. If not, that is a sign of something improper with the original documentation. All vehicles imported into the US must meet EPA requirements by law. Some slip through lax states that are not enforcers. That is the reason cars are more $$ here in Ca . The Euro specifications can make it very hard if not impossible to register. Its a real pain. You are not the first to go through this.
