Rear hatch does not open fully
The power rear hatch on our 2012 ML350 Bluetec does not seem to open fully. It will open and close fine with the key fob or the button on the door, but I'm constantly hitting my head (I'm only 5'10) on it when it is open. At the full extent of its power travel when it reaches the upper limit, you can manually push it up another 3-4 inches of travel.
Is there a way to adjust this so it opens fully, or am I doomed to bumping my head? Many thanks! |
Using the latch open the hatch. Press the close button when you reach your desired height. You should hear one tone. To clear the height press the close button for 2-3 seconds, you should hear two tones. Send me your email address and I will send you a video on the procedure.

That is how it’s supposed to work. On the W166 they used a linear actuator (electromagnetic coils in the shock absorbers) to lift the hatch. This allows infinite adjustment of the opening height. This is designed so that you can set it up to not hit your garage door. When you are in the clear it is permissible to manually raise the hatch the rest of the way by gently pushing up on it.
Contrast this with the W164 system that uses a hydraulic pump. This one you cannot move the hatch yourself. |
