Cooling Fan Operating Schedule & Bug Deflector

'02 ML320, 1500 miles: It seems like my cooling fan (one or two, I haven't checked) comes on to often. Last week, I started the car and just pulled out of the garage, A/C on auto, set to 76 degrees, ambient temps about 80 degrees and a cooling fan comes on. Engine temps couldn't have even been 80 degrees yet. Whats the algorithm associated with the onset of the cooling fans???

Also, I need a bug deflector (black/smoked) and am debating between the OEM deflector and aftermarket. Any experienced opinions/recommendations with either one will be appreciated.

The fans will also operate depending on AC refrigerant temp (pressure), I assume this is why they were operating.

The deflector in this pic is now three years old (if you can see it)...

Got my deflector @ www.************************. Not sure what the difference is between that and the OEM since I haven't seen the OEM unit (nor did the dealer offer one).

Install took about 1/2 hour. It's a perfect fit. Parts of the deflector is integrated along the same screws that hold the grill in place, so that has to be removed.

The hood release handle has to be removed to do this as well. Beware! I accidentally let the hood close when doing the install and had no way to access the hood latch! So I had to get a coat hanger and squirrel around until I could catch the latch!

Other than that "brilliant" move, the install was a snap.

Thanks Gilly and G-Benz. The coling fan is most likely due to refrigerant pressure as you said, Gilly. The bug deflector loks really nice. How scratch resistant it it?

No crack's or scratches on it at all...of course, I have yet to attack it with a Brillo pad!

Since I reserve the ML for long outings, it does get it's share of bugs welded to it. I can generally clean it with soap and water (and some firm rubbing), but I have used those "bug" sponges with no harm done...
