Just woundering what your dealer have done on your ML to silent your rattleing.

I got some rattling when going over bumps (not to bad) and wind noise from the window going at 70mph. What can the dealer do?? What should they do?? What are they willing to do??

Boy, by 2000 model year about everything was fixed I can think of. I have had a couple real hair-pullers on some like yours though. Where is the rattle located in the truck?

Boy, great subject for the ML forum! I wonder why we didn't think of culling this information before....

Most of my noise comes from the rear, recently a rear passenger pointed out how my cargo area light assembly was rattling. I took it in to the dealer and they replaced the foam insulation in the assembly. That probably took away half my noise. Now I think the rear hatch molding is making a large part of the rest of the noises.

The dealers are learning the list of known ML rattle problems, befriend a shop foreman and have them perform all the known fixes. Maybe they'll even Dynamat the interior for you

I've been more atuned to the plethora of rattles emanating from the cabin as of late...

...ML is due in for another "wrench" (FSS) service and annual inspection. I've got another 10K left on my warranty, so perhaps I will voice my concerns at that time.

Plus, a noisy A/C blower has joined the choir...

I still have some windnoise comming from the window when I go over 70mph.

I also some rattleing when I over a bump. I try to find out where it is comming from. Perhaps I should have someone else drive my ML when I try to find out where the bump is comming from.

Squeaks

I, too, have noticed some squeaks, more like cricket sounds according to my daughter, in the right rear area, I think. I took it in to have it checked and they test drove the truck twice and couldn't find anything. Unfortunately, I didn't have the time to ride with them, maybe next time.

Has anyone had this sort of problem?

I've got some clank rattles from the back which were mostly eliminated when the dealer adjusted the rear hatch latch. The residual noise I have may be coming from the carpeted covers in the rear compartment?

Blau, no luck on the Power Roof wind noise...mine pipes up over 80mph only

I think most of the noise from the back is due to those silly panels in the back that side the space back there. It rattles as there is no anchor or weight and it lifts when it rolls over a bump.

I gotta say, the ride is still too rough for me. I know its a truck, but I didn't get that when I was on the test drive!!

I agree that most of the noise comes from the back. I have put small pieces of weather strip tape on the backs of the covers for the CD compartment and the first aid compartment.

The other thing to check if you have creaking over low speed bumps is the rear tailgate and passenger door seals. If you are a fastidious cleaner like me and wipe the door jam areas, it is possible to induce creaking by having the seals "squeaky" clean. I used a little silicone spray and wiped it around the door seals with my finger to stop the squeaking and it worked well.

I would also sugges getting the dealer to lubricate the torsion bars under the vehicle, this will also remove lots of creaking.

Other than that, the trim in the rear load compartment is of poor quality and design which unfortunatlely contributes greatly to the rattles and squeaks.

Wink Rattle fixed

I had a rattle at the right front cabin area, which I originally thought was coming from the a/c duct on the passenger side. I mentioned it on a previous post. It turned out to be coming from the "A" pillar on the passenger side. It was a real "plasticy" sounding rattle, like a bunch of plastic lunch forks bouncing around. I reported it to the dealer on my last service, and they said it was an improperly aligned "A" piller cover. That they had removed it and re-installed it correctly. I have not had any trouble since.

I have been reading this forum for years now, and have read all the horror stories, so I have been expecting the worst. I waited until I could get a 2000 ML coming off lease to avoid the earlier problems. (hopefully)

So far, three visits to the dealer for warranty work, and one "B" service have been good overall. After this last visit, (and by this time I was prepared for them to keep the vehicle at least 3 days!) I was so happy with all the work they did for me that I returned to the dealer early the next morning with 3 dozen doughnuts for the mechanics and service writers.

I hope that my experiences stay this good!

smge1|c says: "I think most of the noise from the back is due to those silly panels in the back "

I keep an indian blanket folded up in back to protect the carpet from dirty items. It is the exact width of the cargo area, and I fold it so that it is the size of the panels. On top of that I keep a small black "gym" bag with my trailer hitch ball, flashlight, umbrella, air compressor, tire pressue guage, etc.

I have never noticed the panels rattling, but mine are weighted down, so that is probably why.

Also, my salesman told me when the cargo cover is not in use, to pull it out about six inches, and fold the stiff end section back toward the front and slip it back into the slot. This keeps a little tension on the retracting mechanism and quiets a rattle coming from that.

window whistle

tabo:

Make sure you're really getting the whistle from the window. I recently found out my whistle is from the mirror. I can make it go away by folding the mirror inwards on the highway. I can also still hear the whistle if I open the window on the highway.

The side mirror lens is not deep enough in the housing on the driver's side. I set my mirror so there is no overlap w/ the inside rear mirror so I can see the left lane. This leaves a big gap. Picture blowing on the top of an open bottle. I suspect that's what's happening on mine...

ML Squeeks and Rattles !!!

Yes indeed, the ML's are made in Alabama, and the good old Alabama boys just do not render "Facharbeit" like the boys from Stuttgard.

If the ML's were true German quality, most of us, including myself, would not be able to afford one, because they would sell for 50% to 70% more, the the resell value would be double.

Just turn the music up, and enjoy your Bose system. The rattles will quickly be forgotten.
