G500 trailer brake wiring???
Is there any update on this issue? I am going to put a hitch on the bugger but i want the wiring for trailer brakes, not the four pin connector they are supplying now. I am sure that as soon as I have it installed they will come up with the right harness and I will be stuck paying again for what I wanted in the first place.
Gilly, is there any way to check with your inside source again? It was supposed to be coming out within days, the way I read it. It seems like a few weeks have passed. Any info would be appreciated

I can try to remember to call and ask again. Has DUTCH had any success on this?

OK, thanks DUTCH. I thought you were inquiring about this a couple months back, whoever it was I never heard back on if they got any info. I'm just buried in a SL rewiring job right now, drivin' me nutty, never thought to call MB on it. By the looks of things at work I may have a MB "special tech" helping me pretty soon with this car, so maybe I can ask then too.
There is info for G Wagen hitch installations on WIS, mentions nothing about trailer brakes, and the parts list for hitches are all no good numbers on our computer. I'll try to gather more info as sanity allows. Gilly

ML trailer brake wiring
Ok guys, here's some info about installing a hitch on an M-Class including the official Mercedes trailer brake controller wiring diagram - in a linked pdf file. Haven't tried it on a G, but G wiring is mostly standard MB.

Hi, I don't know anything about G, but I just did a ML hitch install a couple of weeks back. I would like to report some information about the installation, to see if it would be helpful.
The kit I ordered has a special template for cutting MY02 bumper, so I assume it is the most recent kit from MBUSA. The kit comes with a 4-head harness. 3 heads are at the vehicle side, 2 of them are plugged into a black plastic box, with a piece of PCB in it and I remember something like "trailer brake control" I read somewhere about it. The other one on the vehicle side plugs into the vehicle wiring. The trailer side is a 7-pin round (excuse me here, I am completely new to the trailer stuff, installed hitch for my bike rack) connector/socket. The kit also comes with a 7->4 connector. It looks like standard trailer hook-up, based on my limited Walmart observation. The 4-pin plug can plug into the 7-pin socket. BTW, for anyone who try to connect the harness, do NOT follow MB's instruction to locate the vehicle side connector from inside the cargo area. After remove two plastic covers, I just couldn't find the pre-wired hook-up. I finally found it after removing one of the two body vents cover. It is very easy to access the pre-wired connector there. |

I got in touch with a (different) guy in Montvale, HE says that the hitch is still undergoing US Certification, so it will be awhile yet before G-Class hitches are available here in the US. Since there is no info available anywhere, I guess I would believe this guy, not the guy I talked to in June or July.
On the ML hitch, you need to remove the rear hatch sill plate and remove some of the hardware that holds down the rear of the inner panel, then you can pull the panel out enough to pull back the insulation and then you can connect the hitch wiring and put it through the body. We're really starting to see some G Wagen work, we have 2 2002 US G500's and a gray market G280 SWB convertible in for repairs now! Gilly
