It installs and looks the same as the CD-ROM based nav system.

Then the only problem would be to check if there are any EU maps sold for it like you said.

Do you have anymore info on it then i could check/search for info..

About all I know is that it's still an Alpine system, the disc still says Alpine on it.

Navtech is primarily the provider of the "core" gps information on the disc. I know they do produce the discs, but i don't believe they make any of the GPS units. That's still Alpine. Both the CD and DVD units are Alpine.
I don't see where taking out the MCS unit will assist in any way.
I don't know if you have exhausted the possiblities as far as contacting Alpine directly, I thought you were going to try that route next.
I also wonder if you've tried contacting anyone in regards to a Euro DVD based map that will work in the DVD nav unit.

Another wild theory you can consider also:
When you insert the disc, you get an image of an ML on the screen. WHAT IF the ONLY difference between any of these discs is just the image that is portrayed when the unit is started up? Maybe the core information is the same and you'll have a map just fine, but when you turn it on, they'll be a picture of say a Volvo or something, and maybe a few other things, like no MB dealers listed in the "places of interest", etc. Maybe the differences are subtle things like that, but it'll help you navigate just fine say from one city to the next, etc. I'm not a GPS expert, but just a thought. Maybe I should try putting a S class disc in an ML and see if my theory pans out. Never tried it.

I got a reply to my question to alpine:
Quote:
Thank you for your e-mail.

What information do you need for this unit?Mercedes should be able
to give you the information you need,as we only support after-market units
and have very little if ANY info for factory units such as yours...

We hope that answeres your questions.
Should you require any additional information or have any further questions
about our products, please do not hesitate to contact us.

Best regards,
Alpine Support
I replied to them that MBUSA keeps sending me that i have to go to my local MB dealer but they somehow keep forgetting that i am in the EU and they don't know anything about the MCS and i can't call a 1-800 from EU.

Try a EU disc from another manufacturer for your area as I outlined in my previous post, this is all I have to offer at this point.
My idea, as I stated, is that possibly the differences are very minor. Maybe someone you know has a nav setup in their vehicla and will let you try theirs. One thing I'm not clear on, even after all these posts, is does your MCS have the Nav unit installed, or do you need to buy the Nav kit?

I have the nav working and all.

We usd it for 1,5 year when we were in the states. We even got map cd 1 and 2.. We drove from Seattle to LA and back and from Seattle to NY.(then shipped it)

We tried about all the different types of cd's. Teleatlas, Alpine (other system), becker.

But that is all obvious that these don't work. I work with computers daily and the format that they use for the other nav cd's is totally different then they used on the M-class mcs. I never tried one from a S or E MCS.

It is like this, like they guy from navtech posted in your reply:
Quote:
Alpine normally produces after market navigation systems (not factory fitted), so it could be possible that European CDs/DVDs will be compatible.
So i am hoping that someone reads the posts and has opend the MCS unit sometime before. OR after.. And knows what parts alpine used for the internal works.

That would give me a lead on where to find a possible map cd.

But on the other hand i would like to show the people here that somehow the mail towards MBUSA doesn't work. They always try to show you the way to the local dealer.

By the way i have another question,

we have the motorola startac with carkit and all connected to the mcs. Does anyone know any specs on that carkit?

would it be possible to connect a EU (GSM standard) StarTac to this carkit?

My question is: does the carkit amplify the signal OR does the carkit amplify the signal at a certain frequency?
