Charging ML320 air conditioner?

My air conditioner on my 99 ML320 stopped working and I took it to a local Mercedes mechanic who is pretty good but not that experienced on the M class. He found and fixed the leak (a loose nut) but cannot figure out how to recharge it. The problem is that he can't find the sequence to start the compressor to build up the pressure of coolant.
Does anyone have instructions on recharging the system?
Its a two hour drive to the nearest dealer and I'd rather not go.

You need to find a new tech. Putting in freon will bring up the pressure to a point where the low side pressure switch will make, thus engaging the compressor. Once the compressor is engaged, then it will take the rest of the charge.

Good luck,

Freon in a ML320 ?

I thought that stuff stopped being used in 1993.

I need a recharge... I was looking to see what was in it and only found this thread.

R12 ?

They still use freon. It's just a different type. They switched in '94 or so to r-134a from r-12. They're both "freons".
Thanks

recharge a ML320 Air Conditioner

I am headed to auto zone in a few mionutes.
it hit 80+ and no cold air out on my 99 ML320.
Hope they have a can for me.

5/14 update. Went to Walmart. For $20 got a can of recharge stuff complete with ooil in it as my Mercedes manual suggests.. and it came with the hose & a guage as to not overfill.
Directions:
Start the truck, turn on the air, click on the hose. pull the trigger.
When the arrow hits the mark on the guage...stop.
Now it blows cold.

Don't mean to butt in, but Freon is a registered trade mark of r-12, like Xerox is to copiers. R-134 is known as "serva" or something like that, I don't recall at this second............Also a good thing to check if your a/c isn't working up to par at idle sitting in traffic is the fuse for the aux fans. If the 30 amp fuse is blown (and most likely is), there is a modified aux fan harness after replacing the fuse with a 40 amp.
