Well, I do not have the knowledge nor experience of Gilly, but here goes.

Use either the factory product or basic Phillips bulbs. I purchased Phillips at a local hardware store for $3.95 each.

Don’t go with over watt bulbs, the lenses are plastic and will melt with bulbs over 55 watts.

Don’t go with blue bulbs, the are not only illegal they do not have additional lumens per watt. This is well covered here:
http://lighting.mbz.org/home.html

Also, just a tip, I installed these myself. My tip, remove the headlamp housing. Just under the lamp housing is a plastic strip. On the side closest to the middle of the car reach behind and pinch the two plastic clips by hand and the strip should pop out. Three bolts per housing, one on top, easy to get to, two behind this plastic strip. By getting the housing out you can make sure the bulbs seat properly, the wire is not stuck behind the metal bulb clip and its all done right. So you know I am a girl, had never done this before and I did it in less then one hour, so there you go.

Of course I had to give the local dealer money to have them activate the AAM. If you want the indicator on the dash to indicate when the bulbs come on, be sure to specifically request you want the bulbs AND the dash indicator activated. I had both done and I’m glad I did. Haze/Fog is often a daytime thing, so I wanted the dash indicator activated.

How was that Gilly?

That all sounds OK to me Houston.

On the green indicator, as I've said before I prefer them off, mainly because they are irritating at night, but it's a personal preference for sure. One thing to add into the equation is that the fogs are set up so that if (either) the truck is shut off or the headlights are switched off, when you reactivate the headlights, you need to AGAIN activate the foglights, so to me the value of the dash indicator is somewhat diminished, since you can't leave them on accidentally the next time you drive. But for remembering if they are on or off, it may be nice for the dash light to work just for quick confirmation. Otherwise, especially in the haze or fog you have no confirmation they are on. At night or dark conditions you can simply switch them on and off and figure out if they're on that way. At night, I guess if you really don't KNOW they're on, they're not doing too much for you, are they?

On that plastic trim strip, you don't really pinch them together, they both sort of are pushed downwards, but it's not hard to figure out. The tricky part to me is getting them disengaged and engaged at the other (fender) side.

An hour huh? Hey, the first time I did it it took me only uh, 10 minutes or so! Naaaaaaahhhhhhh, just kidding, you did pretty good for ANYONE doing this job the first time, AND you did it the RIGHT way, no shortcuts. Did you read through some of the posts here first, or you figured that all out on your own?

Well, I did the left side first. I tried to just let the trim piece dangle out to the side and not take it all the way off but as I removed the lamp housing it fell off. Then it took me loosening the right side to see how that darn little plastic clip underneath held the longer trim strip in place. After a few attempts of having the underneath clip on the fender tight before I swung the larger outer trim piece in place it just did not feel right, like OJ’s hand in that glove the first time with the rubber glove on underneath so I tried having that underneath clip on loose, almost falling off loose before I swung the larger outer piece in place and bingo, it fit like OJ’s hand in that glove the second time he tried it on.

I read several post here, specifically the ones by my sweet Gilly-

Do to some mix up in driver schedule I even got a ride home from the mechanic that was going to work on my car. When I asked him about the oil change frequency he said all the employees that own Mercedes at the dealer have there own oil changed more frequently then the dash indicator says. Hmmmmmmm

Gilly,

Could you please advise on how I should reconfigure my fog light switch in order for it to operate my external and internal fog lights seperately? Right now, both the external (a pair of PIAAs mounted on the front bull grill) and the internal ones seemed to be hooked only to the upper side of the fog-lights switch. The auxiliary or 'the bottom' part of the switch does not control anything except for the tiny indicator light inside the very switch.

Thanks for your help in advance.

The bottom half of the switch activates the rear foglight.
Start up the truck, turn on the headlights, then look at the taillights. Then hit the bottom of the switch and check the taillights again, you'll see a bright section on the left taillight, that's the rear foglight.
There isn't a way to seperate the 2 different front foglights that I'm aware of, not if you want to use the factory switch. You'd want to wire the external foglight yourself.

Hey what the heck, I'm not Houstons' Gilly-Willy anymore. Guess she's mad at me. Oh well, get in line, Houston .

Cool

thanks, Gilly! I would never have noticed the rear fog light...

... will keep front fog lights the way they are w/ no extra switches to manipulate them...

Yep, no problem. One other thought is that sometimes, no don't get me wrong, but sometimes you may want to think about researching the owners manual rear quick before asking. In this case the owners manual would have given you the same answer.
But hey, ask away if you want.

Got those on my 1999. Very clean and precise install, the brackets fit like they were OEM, and the harness connectors match up perfectly with the OEM plug.

The foglights operate through the 15-amp auxiliary circuit, so you are limited to how powerful a lamp you can use...

Doesn't the factory lamp have a 3rd inboard light that is the FOG? I've read that the AAM has to be programmed to enable their use and from what I've read getting that done in the US is not a given (due to some DOT height regulation).

I wish our ML was here (it's rigth side is being replaced) but I'm 95% sure that when I press down on the AUX switch on the dash that lights our Hella fogs mounted on the grill-guard.

If I press upward, nada.. nothing. Pressing down on it again turns them back off. I also do not have the dash light coming on that indicated 'fogs in use'. That's an AAM program too, correct?

How exactly does one enable the wiring/function for that thrid lamp housing? What I'm talking about is the enclosure that has the fog lamp like my older 300E.

Geez.. I hope that made some sense (it's 4:00am now).

The in-dash light depends on which model year you have. If it's 98 & maybe 99 then you may not even have the bulb in the dash. Otherwise it's something the dealer programs in the AAM. Note:Lots of people find the dash light annoying as it's qute bright, besides if you cannot see that the fogs are on then they probably aren't doing you any good anyway.

I'm pretty sure the light in the taillight is always enabled and when you press the dash switch up and then walk to the back to look at your taillight cluster i'm sure you'll see the single foglight on.

The front foglight wiring is set to only allow one set of fogs on at a time. So if it controls the brush guard set then the set in the headlights will not turn on and vice versa. You could have the dealer turn on the internal light then add a seperate switch and wiring for the brushguard set to enable all 3 to be on at once. OF course it's illegal to have all 3 lit up on public roads. By the way, the headlamp foglight is only on the older ML not the facelifted bug eye one. The revised ML has fogs in the bumper.
