Seriously, I recently purchased a 2000 and the past posts here are an excellent review of the things to look out for. Some topics I have come across, either I just missed them or they are not here, would be more like annoyances to this model, just little things that tend to annoy. In no order, they include… - Gas hole, it’s at a wired angle. It’s hard to get the hose inserted in the hole. - Radio dims. I’m one of those people that often turn my lights on during the day for safety. The radio dims. You can override this by pressing a few buttons, but turn the car off and next time you have to start all over. - Interior lights. You can’t turn them all on from the driver’s seat. This was fixed in the newer models. - Poor ventilation controls. Hard to explain, but you can’t ever set it to here. It’s always to here and there or here, there and there. Why not make it “up = defrost, middle = dash vents and bottom = floor” and if you go in the middle of those it’s a mix. The way its set up everything is always a mix. - Cup holders. They don’t fit many cups. - Rear center head rest. Yes there is a middle one but I, and I’m guessing most people here, take it off so you can see out in the rear view mirror. - Dang expensive oil changes. If you have had past Mercedes you may be use to this by now, but $195 one time and $395 the next (alternating) is still a lot for an oil change. I concede the do extra stuff but for that much they should rotate the air inside the tires. Also, I’m the first in the family/friends circle to get a Mercedes. I’m a bit surprised how much indignation it has caused. Sorry, this is not from a mechanics point of view, and it may not be what you were looking for. Over all I am satisfied. Just these are my gripes. |

ML430 Purchase
Thanks for the inputs. I currently have a 92' 400E and a 98' LandCruiser, so I am very familiar with expensive oil changes. I use Castrol Syntec 5W-50 in all my cars. Due the extreme costs, I now change my own oil and do all my brake work. My local MB dealer joked at hiring me after seeing my quality disc/pad replacements.
I do have one question, how much oil does an ML 430 take with a filter change? 8.5 qts? My 400E takes 8.5 and my LC takes 7.5. At times I wish that Castrol sold oil in a case of 24 vs. 6...... Brian

Yes ALL MB V8 gassers in the modern era (lets say after 1980) hold 8.5 quarts. The only V8 I can think of that may be different may be the 6.9 (dry sump system), but they were gone by 1980 or so I believe, very close to 80 anyways.
