gear whine

On my 1998 ML320 I have noticed a gear whine coming from the ML while driving. It has been slowly getting louder. The noise goes with vehicle speed, and is not dependant on engine speed or gear I'm in. It is most prevelant after 60mph, and is very noticable at around 70 mph. ]

Any suggestions before I take it in to the dealer...
