ML320 Engine Stumble
Has anyone else had this problem?
Every morning after driving about a mile then stopping at a signal, the car has somewhat of a loss of power. This is especially noticeable with the ac compressor engaged. The engine will shutter then when stepping on the gas a very noticeable hesitation then goes. After this, it will not happen again regardless of the number of time started until the next morning. Ideas? Of course dealer says everything is normal.

The Stumble mystery.
I have it about one of every 100 take offs.
Have not a clue why, but others are experiencing it.

Had happened to me twice. I don't know if it is related but it happened 2 to 3 weeks before I had the CEL light which was related to codes P0170 and P0173.

There's a tech bulletin concerning an updated engine control module, sounds exactly what it is, classic scenario, stumbling with cold engine, lack of power, etc. The dealer should be familiar with it, talk to someone else, common problem right around 2000 model year especially.
The control module was set up to allow the engine to run just a little bit too lean under certain circumstances, seems to be especialy noticeable when cold, just trying to get the emissions a little bit TOO low. Gilly

Engine Stumble
My 2000 ML320 also has experienced an engine stumble as described after a cold start. Not sure why but it is more pronounced just after a cold start and I am braking on a decline. So far it has not been a big enough problem to address but if there is a revised control module I may have the dealer upgrade. What would be the approx. cost of this upgrade?

Same problem here. Has happened 3 times so far. Just as I exit my subdivision, where I REALLY need the power.

Well, the dealer stated they found a technical bulletin for the model year 2001 and it doesn't apply to the model year 2000. So... If anybody has additional information as to whether or not the control module from a 01 would work in a 00 or if there is a replacement part number I can supply them, I would appreciate it. This is a brand new dealership and their experience reflects that.

Found it:
Dealer Technical Bulletin 51/00 51/00-2 Groupr 07-All models up to MY (model year) 2000 (except AMG) with ME 2.0 injection system (M112 and M113): If you receive complaints of rough idle and, or hesitation after cold start, they may be caused by the engine control module (ME-SFI) running very lean after the cold start. To resolve, please install an updated ME 2.0 engine control module, part number as follows: Engine M112 (V6): 112 153 0479 Engine M113 (V8) 113 153 0379 (Ok this is an abridged version of the bulletin. It is for the cars with this engine, there is a similar bulletin for the trucks. The dealer should be able to track it down with this info. The part numbers are a bit out of date, I believe they will just need to replace it with the current part number and it'll be fine. For the V6, the newest number, which also is listed as a supercession for the part number given above, is 112 153 22 79, and retails for around a $1000.00. I asked the advisor about warranty for this, he said it would be covered by the Emission Warranty, 8 yr/80,000mi, so maybe you can still get warranty service for it. If you are out of that warranty, probably end up paying for it yourself. There may be some "core value" to the old module, not sure about that though. ) Gilly

Steve
You could also ask them to check the crank angle position sensor adaptation values, hopefully they know what to look for in regards to that. Even a dead battery can make this clear itself out and need to be reset. It will affect misfire recognition. But on 98 thru 2000, if the ECU hasn't been replaced, it's a safe bet that this is the cause, replaced lot's of them. Gilly

A new 2002 ML 320 stumbled and hesitated badly even after the "FIX".. After 4000 miles/1 year dealer gave me what I paid for it against a 2003 ML500.

The dealer said there was a problem with 2002 computers and that an updated computer was installed. It did nothing.. My wife refused to drive the car. I had to hammer on the dealer pretty hard to get them to buy it back.. No issues at all with the ML 500 though..

The bulletin I referred to is for ME 2.0 trucks/cars, the 02 would be an ME 2.8 injection. That I am aware of, there wasn't a concern like this with the 2.8. There is one bulletin concerning ME 2.8 running rough when coming to a stop with a warm engine, and I remember having to replace a couple control units for this concern. But for the ME 2.0 truck we replaced dozens of control units for that problem. However some of the techs that were doing training in Chicago that were from down south knew nothing of this problem, seemed to be much worse in the cold climate areas.
