2000 ML430 Trans Vent

Gilly: I have a 2000 ML 430 with 45k on it. I drive on the deserts of So. Cal and Nev when the outside air temps are in the 100's F, and although the engine water temp never gets above 95C I have experienced a small leakage from the small grill on the bottom of the bellhousing. The local MB says I have no leak, but I have seen evidence of it on the underside of the floorpan, mostly on the drivers side back seat area. My question is regarding a trans vent. Could it be in this bell housing area and is expelling fumes while hot, but no other time, or could I have a small leak in the converter, or front of the trans. Thanks-------David L

The transmission is sealed, no vent. If it's coming from the small opening in the bottom of the bellhousing, I'd say it's the front pump seal.

Gilly: Thanks for the quick relpy. I'll keep an eye on it, and if it gets any worse I'll return it to the dealer. I plan on moving up to a 2005 ML500 next spring as I've had very little trouble with this one. I also have a home in Montana (America's Autobahn) and I find the power and handling on Montana's mountain twisted roads to be outstanding. You don't really need the brakes for the corners or hills as you might other makes of SUV's. Once you really learn how to drive these vehicles they are a great pleasure! Thanks again
