Thumbs up

I just want to second georgie's comments regarding Hatch and Sons.

Bought my E420 from them and couldn't be happier. It really is the nicest driving W124 420 that I've ever driven.

Hatch is pretty far for me but their work has been the best I've seen.

look for Ed Owen for mechanical work, he's the man!

They did a little body work for me too and not surprisingly it was great.

If you see the number of immaculate old MB's there you'd understand

Avoid East Main Automotive in Northboro, MA.

Cheaper than others, but questionable parts and service.
They tell you to bring in the car early, then by the end of the day, they call and say they don't have time to look at it until tomorrow.
Then another day to order the part and another day....you get the pic. No loaners either.

One time I dropped the car off the night before, and on my way out, I stopped to peer inside the window of another nice benz in the lot, and the next thing I know this crazy man from next door comes out in his jammies, screaming and swearing and saying that he's gonna call the cops and have me arrested for whatever...!! This is like white trash Mercedes service!

I've gone to Hatch and Sons ever since, except for a few minor jobs that can't be screwed up too much (when I'm a little light on $$). Then I go to Grafton Foreign Motors in Grafton (duh). For Saab service, Patrick is the best. General service on Mercedes, good too. Not too cheap, not too expensive.
Has loaners too.

I bought my car from Hatch and Sons and as a favor they checked out my old W123's leaking AC and found leaks from various places. They quoted me like $1k or something to replace a bunch of hoses, a new compressor, expansion valve, and the right amount of R12 freon.

I was going to do it since they seem competent with their job but I ended up selling the 123 instead.

However, other stuff they've done to my W124 (I bought it from them) were exemplary. Right after I bought my car they replaced the belts, a tensioner, all four shocks, all four brakes and pads, main fan viscous clutch, resealed the P/S pump, and replaced the aux.fan relay and of course... an oil change When I got it the car was running really well and still is!

They charge quite a bit - but for big jobs I would definitely go to them. My last oil change from them was $$$$ though. I'll go somewhere else next time or do it myself.

BTW, you might want to stick to R12 There was also another MB shop in Watertown are that had R12 but I forgot what it was called. I never went there as I went to Hatch first.

Good luck!

btw, their website is http://www.hatchandsons.com/pages/service
and they give you a loaner if you call them ahead of time. Look for Ed Owen if you decide you want them to take on the job.

Never heard of them (doesn't mean anything, just that I've never heard of them). I do know of a place in Arlington called "The Benz Den", they do good work. There's also a place in Cambridge by Mt. Auburn Hospital called "Koko's". From what I understand, they're quite good too. E-mail me offline and I'll tell you who to avoid.

Vandeerveer Motors, Norwood. Owner's name is Peter. I am not sure of his stated policy but he could not fix a problem after 3 hours of diagnosis and took the car himself to a Stealership for the repair. Then he refused payment for his services.

what does that mean?

What do you mean by "he refused payment for his services"?? Who did? The person who had the car fixed? Vanderveer refused to pay the dealership? Vanderveer wouldn't take any money for attempting the repair because he didn't fix it? You have to be more clear when you write-I can't ask my computer screen these questions.

I'm curious about Vanderveer because I've heard stories...

1.) I brought my car in to have work done that required diagnosis.

2.) Peter spent 3 hours attempting to repair without a dealership-only diagnostic tool.

3.) Peter delivered the car from his shop in Norwood to a Mercedes Dealership several towns away instead of calling me to come and get the car and bring it to the dealership myself.. (That Dealership diagnosed the problem, replaced the part and I paid them for their services myself.

4.) I called Peter to get his invoice for services rendered since he spent three hours in attempting a repair and another two hours(one hour to get to the dealership and one hour to get back to his shop).

Peter refused to be paid for his services since he could not diagnose the problem and would not just keep replacing parts until the car was finally repaired correctly.

If you need it to be any clearer than that, call Peter or get an interpreter.

Tom

That's what I thought...

I wish you wrote that as clearly as you did the second time.
I've heard rumors that he does things like that. Oftentimes more honest than honest. I've also heard rumors that he is dishonest-I believe those less and less now. Your original wording was ambiguous, he may or may not have been honest. Very difficult to tell.

:D :D :D

If you take your car there, do not say I referred you. Peter is a very honest mechanic - at least as far as I am concerned.

I think he was pissed that when I picked up my car from the dealership, I complained about being overcharged for what they did. I was charged $9 hundred something for what I could have gotten here on MS.com for $5 hunderd something and mechanic (also owns a 1994 E500 and knew what needed replacement) charged 5-6 hours to R&R a part that the Daimler manual said 1.5 to 2 hours to perform, clear codes and 1-2 mile road test)

The dealership did the right thing and reimbursed me for 3-4 hours labor after consulting with the mechanic.

Although Peter's time may have been included in the Dealership invoice, it did not state so and he would not return calls or answer emails to him asking for an invoice for his time.

If you are not sure, ask him for references of both satisfied customers and customers who were not satisfied. Doesn't hurt to check all refs

Unfortunately, I happened to feel some disappointment about Hatch.

I had some underside part painted and some underside part replaced.

I specifically told them to inspect underbody for rust, because the car would be lifted and specialists would be looking at it anyway.

About the paint job, the day I came to pick up my car, rear left jack hole has a spot with peeled off paint. I cannot tell about overall job quality because time has not passed enough.

About the inspection, they reported nothing.

Now my car is at other shop (this shop does not specialize on only MB or on only two or three foreign brands).

The tech let me to see the underside of my car.
He pointed out a lot of spots where rust starts growing, and where rust is already serious.
Some of them were very close to the area on which Hatch&Sons worked.

The rubber coat looked fine to me, but he immediately pointed several areas of problem.
He peeled off the rubber in that area. There was really rust.
In some area, rust is very deep (a hole in the metal). So this rust should have been there also when I went to Hatch 3 months ago.
According to the tech, if the rust was found earlier so that fiberglass reinforcement was not needed, the repair cost is lower.

Unfortunately, this shop charges 75/hour for bodywork (they charge 75/hour for mechanical work)! This is more than Hatch (65/hour for body work).

My car seems to break my bank account due to body work.
