I have been excoriated on this forum for cutting and pasting something to start a thread. Folks saying that I shouldn't start a thread unless I write the post in my own words. Maybe KERRY needs to develop some composition skills of his own instead of simply plunking in a link. If memory serves me correctly, he is even the person that hammered me for not writing it myself.

"Do as I say, not as I do." One of the most common modus operandi of liberals.

It does seem strange but other employers similarly discriminate against brainy people.

Thanks Larry for trying to turning this into a political thread. (not)

No problem. Sure seemed political from the very first post though.

I wonder at what point they try and place those folks into higher orgs or roles? I have to imagine IQ would play a huge part in having effective forensics and detective work.

Not to necessarily defend the practice but don't companies regularly reject applicants because they are over qualified? I lost out on a few entry level jobs because of that. N9t sure I agree with it but I can understand the logic behind it.

Makes sense to me. I agree with Tom. A lot of businesses do it. Why waste your time and money on training someone who will likely leave, due to being over-qualified. Hiring young people in any field is a crap shoot. The average person moves 3-5 times before settling in on their long term career.

FWIW, the ruling was not rendered by the SCOTUS. Rather, it was heard by the Second Circuit Court of Appeals. I doubt the Supremes would take this up, even if he were to file an appeal there.

BTW the article doesn't say what the young guy has been doing with his life since he filed the suit?

People with high IQ who have the ability to process information in an analytical fashion are not wanted for these types of jobs. These people tend to be creative thinkers who think outside the box and therefore tend to not work well in an environment requiring knee-jerk compliance with "policy".

Lower IQ people are more apt to follow official policy training and manuals and therefore are a better fit for this type of role.

Do your job soldier, nothing more nothing less. DO YOU UNDERSTAND?

I was on a jury where two cops were called to testify. Both had masters degrees and one also had a PHd.

I believe all Astronauts who usually come from the military all have advanced degrees. I bieve most pilots in the military have advanced degrees as well.

Must be hard caring that huge brush around everywhere.

If you don't let smart people in at the bottom I don't see how you will ever get smart people at the top unless you import them from other agencies which let them in at the bottom.

US Supreme Court upholds ban on smart cops.

Edit:

I didn't qualify for a job due to experience. Personally I think its a one way street. Don't need intelligence for experience, but intelligence will put you in the experienced category.

It comes down to advanced reasoning and decision making. IE, This situation over here looks better and the CALCULATED risk is worth it.

Companies want middle of the road life'rs'.

Let's differentiate between smart and qualified. Being qualified implies smarts as well as some level of knowledge for the job at hand. Being smart, in and of itself, doesn't.

When Arthur Andersen blew up after the Enron collapse, we hired a woman who had worked in their Philly office Tax department. You could rightly say she was overqualified for the clients we served and we knew she'd move along when a better opportunity arose. About a year later, one did. Corporate Tax manager for a Fortune 500 Company based in NJ. Been nice knowing you.

I can see how it applies in the case of the accountant and I've seen it happen at the college where I work, but it's hard for me to imagine a similar scenario with the cop example. What is the cop job a place-holder job for? Bouncer for Tony Soprano? Hit man for the Mexican drug cartels? How many people become cops as a temporary job? Maybe I'm missing something important.
