Heard this on NPR this morning. It seems like a pointless effort; unless the real issues aren addressed, the refuges will keep coming. There aren't enough small villages throughout Europe to absorb these refugees.

You've lost the detail and message by only thinking of the big picture.

I feel empathy towards the refugees, but I feel this is just perpetuating the cycle.

So what's the me9and detail? That we have an elected official saying nice things that others might not agree with or that we should let them keep going there?

So hard to recognize humanity when you think it no longer exists, or shouldn't.

Humanity as in what? The human race? Behavior of humans? Or the glossing over of some of the more exotic behavior of mankind leaving only when we would like to be but cannot? My dog is closer to the ideal of humanity that we have been in the last few centuries.

I think your heart it in the right place; however, there is no humanity in perpetuating the cycle.

If they really want to help, they should deport this wave of refugees and instead help them solve the issues in their country of origin. Alternatively they should absorb the entire displaced population. Neither of those are viable options to say the very least.

I think people like the easy solution so they can feel good about themselves. Hey, I gave the man a fish today. He won't go hungry. We'll do it again tomorrow and the next day and so on. Teaching him to fish is much harder but doesn't breed dependence and more dependents. However, it doesn't allow you to toss a few bucks at the problem, declare is solved and feel good about yourself.

Helping them to solve the issues is one thing. Do they really want to do this? And by "this", I mean that as a group, are they willing AND able to make the transition? Should they prove an unwilling partner, are we able and willing to cut the cord and say "Sorry, you and me, we out of time." and walk?

Agreed! And to add to your statement, there is also the question of whether the refugees can even assimilate into the cultural ways of the asylum nation. In many ways, accepting refugees without addressing the problems of the originating nation is just delaying the inevitable.

Assuming they cannot assimilate, they will then feel like they’re not wanted anywhere. In time that could result in them harboring ill-feelings towards their asylum nation and who knows what else. Bottom-line, the mayor of this small German town is very short-sighted in his assessment.

As I said, it is about feeding the hungry with a fish. Makes or a good PR splash. "I care". I mean "I feel your pain" went pretty far.

No chance. Europe has disarmed and is useless in terms of influencing world events.[/QUOTE]

To put it mildly. This is hardly a surprising event. It's Bavaria after all.
