When a religious leader flies around in a private jet and lives in multi million dollar mansions.... you know something is screwed up.

The trend in giving pro sports public support seems to be the opposite from this proposed legislation. State and local governments give pro sports big time help in building stadiums and arenas. Texas, Minnesota, Miami, Maryland and Baltimore, Washington, and Atlanta to name a few. All a pro franchise has to do in getting help in building new or renovating old facilities is to threaten to move. The tax exemptions at the federal level seem to be small potatoes by comparison.

This Congress has fallen over itself in giving massive tax cuts to millionaires and billionaires -- the class of people which own sports franchises. "Tax reform" has cut corporate income tax rates by half and has exempted 20% of income from non-corporate owned business forms from taxation. Congress won't take away what it is giving -- it has no interest in imposing taxes on the rich owners of sports teams.

Trump might show some interest in the Tax Policy legislative proposal. He may use it against the owners as a means to club the owners into submission in his war on players who kneel during the anthem. Sort of, if you don't take action against them, you don't deserve this exemption. The threat will be an empty one.

In some European countries churches are state supported. This goes way back.

So in the US the founding fathers thought this should stop. So churches get no state support. And if churches paid taxes they would also be able to demand a seat at the table; they should be able to make their wishes known about what laws should be passed.

Some might say that churches are doing this now. If so then who is letting them get away with it?

By the way, in Oklahoma the state constitution says that no state support of any kind can go to any church or religion. Conservatives are fighting this tooth and nail since they seem to think that a state supported religion is a wonderful thing.

There have been a few court cases on this. So far the conservatives have lost every case. There has been talk of a constitutional amendment for the state constitution, saying this clause was put in back in 1907 to make the Indians happy or because of hate for the Jews. (?)

By the way, if this passes churches would be able to rake in state funds for their programs but they would still be exempt from taxes.

Not a bad deal.

Certain healthcare providers get away under similar tax schemes. We have the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center conglomerate here and all over the state that owns probably an easy third of the county's real estate which is exempt from many taxes. Several attempts at changing tax structure result in massing lobbying and end of the world scenarios here.
