How to transport a fintail (the tough way)...

To get this place back to normal topics here is the report of the transport of my fintail to the new workplace we rented.

As preparation for the transport I put some weight into the towing vehicles, to improve traction (just kidding, both cars were loaded with workshop-stuff)

After two years of sitting in the dark, my fintail sees daylight for the first timd.

Big problem was, that the ignition key got lost... Those lifts for moving paletts around are very handy..

The best girlfriend of this world did the towing with her 280S. Rather tricky to get the car around that tight bend.

Finally we got the fintail on the trailer, everything tighted down, ready to roll..

"Snowflake", our mighty 200D, was responsible for towing the trailer.

Looking in the mirror, everything looks fine. Pretty interesting, both cars are 200D, both cars are 4-speed standard, both cars have MB-tex interior.

We noticed, that the temp-sensor of the clutch for the fan was dead. We noticed that in hilly northern black forrest. Wo noticed, that 75 hp are really stretched to the limit...

At the new place, we had the following task: get the fintail up the ramp, U-turn to the door, another ramp, 90° right turn to the final destination.

It is not possible to steer the car, the breaks are not working, no drivetrain...

Tight place..

Almost there...

Big trouble. The tow line almost snapped.

My uncle, the sailor, would be pissed. Line under stress around a corner without roll...

Somehow I had expected something like that. For that reason, a friend was holding a wood block under the rear wheel the whole time. Luck...

Here we are. Now the right turn. We had to remove the right front wheel and move the car around on the dolly.

Yes, I do actually look a little nervous. Yes, this is blood in my eyes I think, I have some right to be nervous

All the way to the right, thats were we were heading..

Almost there...

Anyway: Kids, don't try this at home

Kind regards
Eberhard

Looking at the 2nd to the last picture, what's that car we see just the nose of, to the right? (The red one with chrome headlight rings)

That would be a Opel Rekord.

The 200 D did 75 hp after the modification. It got different injectors and the exhaust feeds back into the intake.

Before that, 72 hp was the limit...

I love the small Diesel. Runs 100 mph, is cheap on insurance and tax and the economy is unsurpassed... Even the parts are cheaper than at the bigger engines.

Kind regards

Nice work.
Glad to see a fintail being cared for, as well as that 108.

What is with the yellow stripes between 50-60 kmh on the speedo of the 124?

Speed limit in towns is 50 kph. If you stay between 50 and 60, you are usually safe.

Great photos and great story.

I am amazed that you managed to take pictures during all this. I'm sure i would be so stressed about the task at hand that i would forget taking pics.

As you can see, no pics of the really tough times getting the car on and off the trailer. At that time I really didn't have the time to fiddle around with a camera

BTW: The car was bought new by my uncle in 1966. I even found the train ticket going from my parents place in Frankfurt to the Mercedes plant in Sindelfingen under the passenger seat...

Kind regards
Eberhard
