Question About Removable/portable storage
Hi gang!
What type of large capacity removable storage media (ie microdrive, memory stick, FlashMemory, etc) is available and what in your opinions are the pros and cons. Specifically, I need to know about storage capabilities 1Gb and greater. Thanx!

It depends on what kind of device you're going to connect it to. If this is for a camera, then you have to use the media that it is designed for.
If you're talking about a notebook computer, then a microdrive will work with an inexpensive adapter in a PC card slot. But most desktop PCs don't have PC card slots, so you'll need to get a different adapter for that. The largest capacity I've seen in a microdrive is 4GB. They're pretty rugged and will take quite a bit of abuse when not running, but you don't want to knock them around too much while they're spinning. They'll work in some cameras that take CompactFlash memory (my Canon for example) but they are a little power hungry. Your other alternative is a USB flash drive. I've seen capacities up to 2 GB, but there may a hitch there. The large capacity devices are USB 2.0, which is fairly new. There are a lot of machines out there equipped with USB 1.1 ports, and I'm not sure the new devices will work with the older ports. You'd have to check on that. Oh, and don't forget about DVDs. DVD burners and media are getting cheaper by the day, and you can put 4.7GB on a single layer disc. Then there's Sony's new double layer disc (and drive) that holds 9GB and is read compatible (they say) with most any DVD drive.

Jeez, for a minute there I was beginning to think my topic wasn't sufficiently (pick any three): outlandish, political, inflamatory, self-serving, ostentatious, self-aggrandizing.
FWIW, the end use will be to distribute pdf format technical documentation to the end users of the tools that we build/sell/service. Right now, we're bumping against the 650mB CD-R wall with some of the more comprehensive document sets. I've been tasked with researching alteratives delivery methods...imagine that....as un-geek as they come and I'm researching storage alternatives. GO figure. Anyway, thanks for the input Rick! That USB 2.0 issue would have slipped between the cracks (in my head) for sure. I'll do some research on the DVD aspect too.

PODS, now that's a good one. You could fit a lot of Gigs in there!
Randy, that sounds like a perfect application for DVD-R. Rather than send out a $500 (or more) storage device, you send out a $0.29 DVD.
