CB radios and GRMS mobile units
Dear friends:
If you are familiar with this radio stuff, please recommend good units that have great transmission range and audio quality. Please state their model numbers. Thanks. Best regards, Eric |

It's GMRS (General Mobile Radio Service). Handhelds are 2W and approx. 1-2 real world miles (on the road) with a duckie antenna. Range drops dramatically in shopping malls and enclosed urban spaces. I've always been partial to Kenwood transcievers. As with CB radio, including SSB, the power rating is dialed in unless you illegally amplify, so all you can do to boost range is probably the antenna system.

Get an Amateur Radio license instead. See www.arrl.org for more info. Lots of bands, much more power and range, simple testing requirements and only 5 wpm Morese Code, which can be memorized and never used again.
Another side benefit is that the FEDS (FCC) have pre-empted State and Local scanner laws for Ham Radio operators. So, if you live in Michigan or several other states, you don't have to get 'permission' from the State to have a scanner. You still need a license to use FRS or GMRS but few do.
