The problem with any libertarian candidate is libertarians. The only thing most libertarians agree on is that freedom is good. After that, they squabble. For example, I am a lowercase libertarian. I don't think the gov's got much useful input in the issues surrounding human reproduction. I also think the gov isn't especially useful in dealing with domestic transactions. This is tied, of course, to my first point sometimes. I also don't think gambling (nor gamboling) is a great way for gov to make its money--I don't like gov competing with the gambling industry. I think taxes are too high because of cynical social-engineering programs that suck the life out of personal initiative and responsibility. I hate corporate welfare--companies should be allwoed to fail if they cannot compete. Etc.

Where I differ radically from libertarianism is in foreign affairs. I think the USA must aggressively pursue terrorism and terrorism-supporting states militarily, financially and politically. We are at war and must defeat this enemy. As long as we are the aggressor, we will keep those mad ba$tards off-balance and decrease the chance that they will successfully wage attacks against us or our friends.

For that reason alone, I would vote for either Bush or Kerry rather than the Libertarian.

PS I also differ with Libertarians on the environment. On that issue, I am closer to the Democrats than any other group.

Do you think that your average libertarian is completely comfortable on the fringe? In other words, would you like to see the party adopt a broad set of principles that would make it more viable (sell out to some degree, but just enough to get some serious attention from disgruntled Republicrats)? It really doesn't seem like it would take that much to make a move in that direction. It seems to me that the squabbling should be put on hold until libs attain a handful of seats on Capitol Hill. Is that just too far-fetched?

It's the muffled part that's in need of repair, don't you think? If libertarian hard-liners would ease up in regard to the environment and drugs, don't you think the party would gain appeal to a broader audience? Probably. But then they'd just fracture between those who wished to be Democrat-lite vs Republican-lite. It's as Z opined early-on and accurately--libertarianism also has its pseudo-pinkos on one end and its cryptofascists on the other.

Big-"L" Libertarianism is a sort of garbage pit of people pi$$ed at the major parties' lack of integrity (Republicrats are demonstrably vote/power whores). But Libertarians will never agree on any universal set of pragmatic goals for governance. We're all fine with theory, its the reality that slays us. The whores will win the pragmatic arguement everytime.

Yes, it's definitely a lot easier to point out what's wrong than it is to actually address the problems. Oh well........

I cannot say that I 100% agree with ANY parties platform. However, the Libertarians are the closest to my own views.

As much as I dont like it, I agree. The whole point of my voting Libertarian is to swing the federal government back to where the Constitution actually means something again. Both the major candidates seem to develop instant illiteracy when placed near a copy of the "Law of the Land." The only one of the original 10 Rights guaranteed, not granted, by the Constitution that has not been gang raped by all three branches is the 3rd Amendment, which states that no one must give involuntary quarter to soldiers. Yet.

Until the Barry Goldwater Republicans start taking a greater foothold of the RNC, I will stick with the LP and the Republican Liberty Caucus. The latter, I am sure, has sold out its principles and endorsed Bush. But, what else would we expect them to do. Stand for something? You must be on crack...
