Looks like it's gonna get ugly!

Have never posted a political thread, but my wife asked me tonight why they did not have the troubles in Boston, like they are having in New York already. Hon, I said, those were Democrats, these are Republicans. It did get me to wondering though,,,,, why is the violence so prevelent on the left? I can't remember when the Republicans blocked traffic, and broke windows and caused major disorder. Is there a parallel here? Just wondering, but not too much,,, I'm going to watch the Bristol race. :D

I haven't seen any reports of violence. On the right, they just bomb abortion clinics and federal buildings full of kids, and send fake anthrax to birth control clinics. Other than that, their lunatic fringe is pretty peaceful.

Don't forget the far far far right millitia's(sp?) that run around playing army and want to destroy the US government.

The freemen militia in Montana

Forrest Gump thread

There are nuts on both sides. The post that started this thread targets violence as some kind of Democrat trait. Ugly is as ugly does.

Botnst 08-28-2004 09:14 PM

The Freemen! I'd forgotten them. There was also that nut in Texas, where was that, Fort Davis?

I kind of sympathize with parts of Posse Comitatus--taxes are a great reason to be pi$$ed at government. Why, even folks in Boston didn't like taxes at one time. Oh well, they probably moved west.

I'm not sure what the wingedness index is for anarchists. I think protest marches are fine except when people get violent.

The explanation for protest-preference contra-Republican I think is pretty clear. Republicans tend to be conservative. Conservatives like things the way they are and resist change. They define status quo. That's the definition of being conservative--they conserve their power. They have nothing to protest.

Democrats fancy themselves liberal and the protesters buy it. In reality, they're conservatives, too. Democrats want to conserve what they have. They want to conserve their programs, etc. But the protesters are struck starry-eyed by the lip service given them by the Democrats. Not all of them, because there were plenty of demonstrators in Boston.

It wasn't the taxes as much as it was how they were imposed. Massachusetts has roots in what was essentially the earliest form of communism, the Commonwealth movement active among the puritan sects like the Pilgrims and the Quakers in Pennsylvania. All of the Nw England states were Commonwealth states except for New Hampshire and Vermont. New Hampshire was a Crown colony reserved by the British navy because the hardwoods that grew there were the finest in the world for shipmasts. As a result it was only lightly settled. Vermont at this time was wilderness. In the Commonwealth states each town was built around a common area, and each resident had to donate labor to work the common land exactly in the same manner as the Farm Communes of the Soviets 300 years later. The church acted as the social service, divided produce from the collective, collected taxes and ran the courts, and direct democracy in the form of town meetings made the laws. They were pretty much left alone to live this way for 100 years until around 1760, when the King sends a Royal governor to Massachusetts to collect his taxes, taxes that actually were necessary to pay for the cost of protecting the colonies from the French and their Indian allies. He also sent the Church of England, a move that caused bitter friction and eventually led to the separation of church and state doctrine. It was more resentment over this sudden intrusion into their lives by people who had become foriegn to them that caused the radicalism in Massachusetts.

Colonies in the South were Crown colonies. They produced wealth thru tobacco, indigo and timber, and were divided amongst the English noblemen by the King. This is why there was a large Torry movement in the South that did not exist in North. They had longer standing ties directly with England. Why they were motivate to join the rebellion is still a matter of deabte today, but the movement to outlaw slavery was very advanced in England and that may have had as much to do with it as anyything else.

Those people were criminals. They only became famous because in each case the government botched the job of arresting them. The left was brutally supressed in this country by the entire authority apparatus all thru the 70s and early 80s.

I don't think those Bostonians chucked the tea for religious reasons. It was the taxes.

The British troops marched all over the New England states kicking a$$ and having fun with collaborators and such. In the south, they were kicked out (after the southerns fired their top general and installed a fighter). The British were trying to join with the more stable colony, NY. They got as far as the Chesepeake and ran into some difficulties. With a southern general and the French Navy.

Why does it not surprise me that you were the first to jump on this thread ? Kirk,,, you are like a vulture, sitting on a post, looking for fresh meat. I'm glad the left has a savior like you to protect their interests. Meanwhile, I don't remember any political conventions going on at Oklahoma or abortion clinics,,, et al. Was Mcveigh a republican? By the way, the race was excellent, with Earnhardt Jr. winning exactly 5 years after his dad won. :D

They have a a very active group here in Madison. They used to have "rides" every Friday and videotape it. The city cable station would run footage the next day and whoa... what a hoot! Those folks really know how to piss of motorists!!

Amen to that...I've run across a similar group in San Francisco once. This was compounded by the fact that I had just gotten off a 12 hour shift and was trying to get to the base of operations...which was right by Pac Bell Park...during the World Series, just as a game was beginning...

Wound up sitting in traffic for over an hour just to get past their traffic jam (and another hour or so in stadium traffic)...to say the least, I was incensed...

Quote you: "why is the violence so prevelent on the left?"

had nothing to do with conventions. You start a thread with something like that, you are inviting a response and then are surprised when you get one. Personally, I am amazed that someone who supports a president who started an illegal war for no good reason and used our military to murder tens of thousands of innocent Iraqis is making the laughable claim that Democrats are "violent". You guys have unleashed an orgy of violence and murder on this planet that is viscerally disgusting, with your phony WMD hunt that covered up a murderous thirst for oil. The Republican Party is the party of violence.
