I popular thing for stations to do around here is to mark up premium and mid grade fuels. It is quite common to find regular at $1.79- $1.89 with midgrade at $2.19 and premium at $2.29. When I asked the gas attendant [HS aged] why this is done, he said [while wearing a vote Kerry pin] that he thinks it is a good idea, taxing the rich. I then proceeded to explain my situation [recent grad, little money, old Volvo requiring mid-grade] The ass then proceeded to explain that I should buy American. Needless to say, that was the last time I went there.

Really, I'd like to know the value added portion of the 20 cent increase in final price..... Anybody on this list a petroleum chemist?
Interesting stuff on the Porsch costs; to think I wanted to get an 86' 930! Never mind.
As for the gas, I believe if regular leaded is mixed with unleaded premium, the overall octane actually goes up if mixed 50/50, but then for an engine with a CatCon behind it, well, you get a fouled CatCon, and for an engine requiring leaded fuel, the lubrication from the lead content is cut in half.
Don't think that works if both are unleaded.

I am glad somebody resurrected this thread. As I stated earlier, I had been told by a chemist friend of mine who works at a refinery that if you mixed regular and high test half and half when you fill up, that the chemicals that are present in the high test will interact with the regular as well and increase its octane. I tried it this week in my 82 280 SL. It worked great - no pings, same gas mileage. I seemed to notice a slight decrease in low end power, but they may be because I need a tuneup. He did say that it only works well in warmer climes, so if you live up north you might want to stick with whatever your doing.

Cool

I'm a little young for it, but did any of you guys from oil-producing states ever run your car on "drip"? Something that came from the well, very combustible.
