Absinth, anyone?

A friend of mine brought a bottle of absinth (70%) back from his vacation in Spain. The stuff is freely available over there since ages, but recently it has been legalized here in Holland aswell. Has anyone ever tried it? I'm looking for a good recipe to enjoy this 'green devil', and maybe take up impressionist painting aswell...

CHEERS!

Please take picture of the "trip" you take when you drink the stuff. Share 'em with the gang.

I tried it one, ...and it.....Su@%*.
It tasted so bad I almost barfed.

I'm not a fan of licorice and anis so that might
have been the cause.

Louis.

The stuff in Thailand was made or aged in wormwood. They called it "green fairy". Available in most bars in the river districts. Mild narcotic effect. Not as strong as the opium there.

So I'm told

Absinth was very popular in the 19th Century due to its 'psychological' effects. Van Gogh, Gaugain and their artist-colleagues were very fond of the drink. When things started to get out-of-hand, authorities banned it. But recently, for some reason, in some parts of Europe its legal again. When it was banned, alternative liquor appeared based on anis, like Pastis (and Pernod) which has become the French national drink, or Ouzo in Greece, or Raki in Turkey. Although the taste is somewhat similar, the effects are supposed to be quite different. Only one way to find out I guess... :p
