I found many of the little bastards in fox holes at Ft. Polk LA, many managed to sting...several times and hurt like hell.

Ah, Kisatchie. The high country. I used to live in Vowell's Mill--about 15-20 mi north of Tiger Ridge. BTW MedMech, have you been following the news about an actual tiger sighted at Ft Polk? "Cub" estimated at about 100#. Wonder how many armadillo's/day it takes to feed a growing cub. Eventually kitty is going to discover broiler houses.

Howdy Kirk,
Right in the middle of my reply the power went out caused by the tunderstorm that went through so I gave up last night.
The Scorpions here can get up to about 3" in body length and have a green tinge to their color.

I don't know what variety exists around my place, but they are more brown than that. I got stung once. One got into my jeans, which were not touching the floor in any manner prior. I called the doctor, and was told basically not to worry about it, since I didn't appear to be having any reaction to it. The pain was gone by that evening. I seem to end up with one in the house about every few months. The last one somehow managed to hitch a ride with me to work. I felt something crawling on me, and swiped at it, only to fling the nasty thing onto the workdesk. It scuffled off underneath, where all of the PC's and wiring are before I could kill it.

Needless to say, I'm beginning to get rather sick of Texas.

Found one in Michigan in 1977 near Cheboygan (sp). Those things hunt me down wherever I go. Mercifully, I haven't been stung by a dangerous one yet. But anybody can develop an allergy. Yahoo.

There are plenty of Tarantulas and Black Widows around, too -- wouldn't want you to feel left out!

A shot gun?! For what -- the rattlesnakes, coyotes, havalina, and bobcats? Or the occasional cougar?

Scorpions! Why did it have to be scorpions? Never been stung but spent enough time in Turkey to NEVER sleep with my arm or leg hanging out of the bed, made sure the sheets didn't touch the floor and always shook out my shoes before putting them on.
They (the Turks) also like to put their bed legs in coffee cans filled with water to keep the scorpions from crawling into bed.
Looks like I won't be retiring to AZ anytime soon.

Texas is just full of nasty critters. The Brown Recluse spider is a big hazard in the Houston area. They are deadly, and people often lose limbs or get badly scarred at the least. In the Clear Lake area, it is in the top five or so reasons for emergency room treatment. I have never heard of Black Widows down here, and the tarantulas, which are more scary than dangerous anyway, have pretty much been killed off, and I have never seen a scorpion here. Probably the most pesky insects here, next to the ubiquitous mosquito, are the fire ants. We have both imported and local varieties. If you take a small child anywhere there is grass, you have to watch him every second to make sure the little guy doesn't accidently step in a mound. They will tear that kid up in seconds. After that we have snakes,s nakes, and more snakes. Rattlesnakes, copperheads, water moccasins, vipers, the damn vermin are everywhere. And then we have cockroaches the size of a pocket knife, and of course the occasional alligator. Even the cute stuff is deadly. The armadillos carry leprosy, the raccons will give you rabies and the possums carry plague. Yes, I agree, it is easy to grow tired of it.
